NIGHTMARE First Day in Naples Italy. Is it Safe? 😫

We've arrived in Naples for the first time and off to a very bad start. We were scammed the moment we arrived by a taxi driver. Taxi driver scams are common throughout the world, we just didn't expect it in Italy on our very first day. It left us with a very bad first impression of Naples, Italy.

We continue the video and try to put the bad beginning behind us by exploring the city.

We walk around the city and right away enjoy the vibe. It's a little gritty but also pretty, there are lots of people and lots of good food. We walk down Christmas alley which has Christmas items for sale all year long

To cheer ourselves up we stop to get an Aperol spritz right on the street that you can take away.

We walk around some more and because it's so hot we stop for an iced coffee to cool down on one of the main pedestrian streets Via Benedetto Croce.

Our very cute apartment that we rented is very near so we do a tour of the one bedroom loft.

Lastly we head out again to get a bite to eat. We were just in Sicily which is famous for Arancini, and Naples has a similar street food but instead it's fried pasta called frittatina, we found it at a place called Passione di Sofi.

Afterwards we head to Piazza Bellini where you'll find lots of people hanging out and some old ruins.

I was born in Napoli but raised in London so often hear negative comments about Napoli so am glad to see you did not let your first negative experience of Napoli influence the rest of your stay. Hope you get to go back as there is plenty to see and do. Happy to give you any of my recommendations for when you return.

I’ve visited all of Italy many times but this summer I had a few days before my flight out of Rome and after staying on an island in the Bay of Naples, I decided to spend 3 days and 2 nights in Napoli. Hands down one of the best cities I’ve ever been to. The city is 100% unscripted and raw. By that I mean, other cities have big budgets and corporate sponsors to make the place pretty, or host events, or create a downtown or tourist center and pretty little attractions for tourists to feel comfortable spending their money. Napoli has none of that. Only its pure and holistically natural and real raw beauty. Behind the grime, decaying facades and graffitied up walls, you can see the beauty and opulence this city once had dating back 100’s of years. Some cities will build buildings and settings to emulate the past architecture and craftsmanship but often time it feels a bit phony. Napoli is the real deal. You will experience unimaginable and unspoiled beauty, next to deteriorating infrastructure, next to a hipster bar, followed by terrible smells and uncollected garbage, young kids riding scooters, old timers chilling in the piazza, some of the best foods you’ll ever have, high end Michelin star restaurants, an awesome marina with mega yachts, hotels that turn-of-the-century heads of states slept in. Some streets are beautifully paved while others have gaping holes and no plan or ever being repaired. Napoli city has many sections that are all interconnected. The quartieiri spagnolo is old and super run down but full of life and energy, old Napoli has the grit, grime and teeming with awesome locals looking for you to try their homemade wine and mozzarella and to stay for dinner. Chaia is a beautiful section with tons of high end shopping where you’d think you’re in Paris. Napoli is a mixed bag of realness and yes if you find yourself by the train station something could happen to you (stay away from that area if you can). Napoli is a city that the country of Italy, corporations, media, influencers have all turned their backs on. Media and some people will post how terrible the city is and they will compare it to a 3rd world country. It’s far from 3rd world. This was a New York City, London, etc of its day. It’s a beautiful city with thousands of years of history that has been neglected. Some people say that Napoli should be “cleaned it up” and turned into a Disney Land…..i say no way….Napoli is wonderful just the way it is. I personally wouldn’t change a thing. It’s not a place for the feeble minded or for those who are afraid to venture outside of your comfort zone. Napoli isn’t a tourist attraction with cute mascots running around. One of a few cities left that hasn’t been bought and cheaply manufactured for tourist dollars

Fantastic. My wife and I have just returned from a forth visit to Italy and our first to Napoli. We feel the identical way about the city that you do. My two brothers and wives refused to join us there and stayed in Sorrento. We loved it and went back for a second day there. It features in another of my videos that I will publish soon.
We absolutely loved it. As someone said, it is the real Italy.
Cheers, Roger

Unfortunately that kind of things happens in almost every country and it's so messed up cuz tourists can get a really bad impression of a country. But i'm glad you guys talked about it so your audience can be more careful

One way to avoid getting scammed by taxis is if you know how much the price should be, negotiate beforehand with the driver (& record on your phone in case he tries to extort you later). Don't count on the meter always being accurate.

I ran into a similar scam a few weeks ago in Munich. My sister and I were following the route on our phones and knew the second he took a wrong turn. We asked where he was going and he said ‘no problem, this is the way!’ At the next red light we got out and walked away. He was clearly driving us around the city in the wrong direction. A few choice words may have been used as well.

Thank you for making a fun video and for understanding the edginess of the town, its definitely not for everybody! I m British and i dont like bloggers dumping on Naples, we have to remember we are guests.
I think the reason Naples is safe is because there is a big presence of Mafia spies, and also Tourist Police. There are repercussions for locals who cause trouble to tourists.
A handy tip not to get scammed is to agree the price before the trip and then to TAKE A PHOTOGRAPH of the registration plate. I m a 63 yr old lady, i travel alone and i ve learnt everything the hard way!

I'm German and travel since over 50 yrs to Italy, they are like our cousins - I never ever got scammed, Italian people are very very honest. You can have anywhere in the world a ''black sheep''.

Sorry that happened to you guys. Same thing happened to me in Vegas. Happens everywhere., Unfortunately. The red ornament you asked what it was, is an Italian horn also known as a chili 🌶 😢red pepper, which is supposed to ward off evil and bring you luck. Should have got one before your taxi ride lol Enjoy! Love watching you!

Been travelling to Europe for almost 20 years, this has been going on for ever. Italy is the worst for taxi scams…but it’s still my favourite country ❤

It certainly sucks that scamming happens, but glad you shared your experience to provide warning and what to watch for. Glad it did not wreck the day or short stay. As for the clothes, only started to think about it in this video, when you suggested you travel from carry on's. I got to thinking how efficient your travels must be to be able to do that. I like to collect shot glasses from all our travels (3 from our recent Halifax / Cape Breton trip) so I'd be shipping something home for sure. Keep up the great travels, and stay safe!

Sorry, guys. Glad you just went with it and had a good day regardless.

I do notice you repeat outfits but have never noticed if it is two videos in a row!

You actually inspired us to go away for two weeks with carry on only! Man, was that easier.

Here's to more delightful travels ☺️
