I prefer the new version because the original was misleading. They mentioned 'punching the ball forward' when actually you can handpass in any direction, they mentioned 'four quarters of 20 minutes with time added on for stoppages which could be as much as an extra ten minutes' when actually it could be an extra ten minutes for each quarter making a possible 120 minute game. They showed players taking speccies and then said 'that was called a mark' so newbies thought a mark was a speccy. It probably had other confusing elements but without re-watching the video I can't recall what they were. The new video is not perfect but it is an improvement on the old one.

i think it corrects some of the rule fuzziness from the last video but loses some of the hype. i do enjoy the comedy they added. you are correct some of the international comparisons were definitely missed from the last video

The addition of "You can't throw the ball" is good but the "IT'S NOT RUGBY" should have been kept in. I think some of the omissions should have been kept in but overall it was a pretty slick piece of marketing. Bring on season 2023, bullish about my Crows.

Agree Rob. The original spelt out the game shown relative field sizes and rules. Not just hype. My great uncle was captain of The South Melbourne Swans (beside Ablert Park Lake).

They improved on some things, pointed out that you cant throw the ball, talked in metres not yards, appealed to females (half of the worlds population), showed the elevation of a complete centre bounce, they explained the scoring system clearer, explained how to get the ball back in possession and the holding the ball rule a little better, as some people have noted the "What is AFL" clip was aimed at the US market, it wasn't perfect but it was ok?

I think this video is a much better one than the original - it explains things a bit clearer (the other was aimed at the US and it sort of shows).
I think the AFLW logo is very clever - the W is stylised to be a goalsquare and goalposts.
EDIT: THe reason they don't talk about number of teams in AFLW is because that was probably up in the air when they started planning this video. I think there is now 18 in the AFLW too.
EDIT2: As a dees supporter I will never get sick of "Surely not another...." (it's a rare bit of James Brayshaw commentary that I don't mind).

Totally agree with you about them dropping the ball (pun intended) by not including the dimensions of the other ball sport codes' playing areas. That was a pretty amazing graphic in the first one -- it even stunned me, and I'm Aussie Rules born and bred! Also, I'm not sure exactly who this video is aimed at. The first one was obviously aimed at Americans, but this one looks as if it's preaching to the converted at times.
On the plus side, I thought that the inclusion of AFLW footage was seamless and maintained the energy of the video perfectly.

I like this one better because it explains the rules more rather than just concentrating on the spectacular parts of the game. This helps people understand the game more. Showing all the spectacular stuff might make them want to watch it more but they have no idea what they’re watching.

Both versions had their good and bad aspects. I liked the comparison of the field in the old one, but the scoring is detailed much better in the new one.

Though both videos do lack on rules such as push in the back, and tgey could mention the 50m penalty.

Also Rob should do weekly tipping videos for each round

This is more of an update to fix the unanswered bits from the original video. Yes, I agree they should have kept the size comparison of the fields.

Rob, the women's game has the same 18 teams as the men's.

I agree about the excitement of the video and that they should have included the playing field comparisons. They have explained some things better in this video though like the turnovers and the scoring, but it could still be a lot better.

I think Rob’s critique is very interesting and fair. I also think that the comments also are good and add to the discussion. Just one point: you don’t play AFL. AFL is a league. You play Australian Rules Football otherwise know as footy.

I much prefer this new version because it does a much better job of explaining the rules.

The original was actually misleading, although I agree that they should have included the graphics showing the difference in pitch sizes.

Yeah I actually prefer the old one I think it explains things a bit better and like you said shoes the spectacular aspects of the game and size comparison to other sporting fields. I don't think they needed the humour in it just explain the rules.

I will say one thing they explained better in the new one is how the scoring works. The old one they just said a final score looks like this but this one explains the first number is the goals scored worth 6 points the second is behinds worth 1 point and the 3rd is the total score.

I like the older one better (and maybe that has a little to do with the fact that my Hawks were dominant at that time). But, one thing this did much better was explain the SCORING properly (a pretty important factor). Go and have a look at some reactions to the old one, you'll see almost nothing but confusion and thoroughly blank looks when they semi-explain the scoring system in that one. This one clears it right up.

This so much better than the original

I prefer the older version. This lacks excitement. I liked in the previous one how they showed height comparisons of players and the overlay of ground size. I do however like how they have included the AFLW & showed some of the skills and ferocity with which they play. They could have mentioned that they also have 18 Teams. Overall I just think it lacked excitement. Go Dees ❤️💙
