For years we lived on a lake, and every night my dog would bark for hours and hours.

When I moved, the people that now own the house (who don't have a dog) found that beavers started gnawing the back fence posts. I didn't know my dog was fending off the beaver hordes from destroying our fence, loyal companion indeed.

I went to a small technical school in Cambridge and the university's mascot was a beaver.  It's not your typical school mascot like a lion, bear, bulldog or belligerent  leprechaun but beavers were the perfect mascot since they're often referred to as "nature's engineer" :-)
