Dude, SAO is portrayed as a level-based MMO, and kirito busts his ass leveling up, so yeah, he has the right to be overpowered in the way he is .

He is op due to him knowing how to grind and level up, the "beater" knowledge. The absurd thing about him are the "bugs" when his eyes turns golden, villians get fucked up. Other than that, he just knows how to play the games he plays.

Ilthats basically how rpgs work. If I recall he was already in the 70s with everyone else who was in the guild and at that specific moment he went to a lower level to capture someone. It's like being geared up and ready for the final boss but going back to the first route at the beginning and comming across that routs enemies who don't power scale to the player

Then again, everyone was put in at the same time, but Kirito had a level advantage because he was a beta tester and knew the ins and outs on how to level up faster, but at least he wasn’t the “pay to win” type of guy cuz he was also the most skilled

As some people here already said, it is mainly the pacing of the anime which makes Kirito look super OP. Most of his moments of struggling that are in the different Novels are not shown which makes him look like a massive Mary-Sue. He lost quite a lot of battles, struggled in a lot of ways.

And to clarify for people who do not know, Kirito didn't suddenly get revived in the final battle against Heathlcliff, it was just something in his head, imagining himself dying before he got a second wind of determination as portrayed by the pixels coming back together to reform his "Willpower".

To be fair, he was one of the top players(?) and the people attacking him are the low-level guys who thought it was some chump they could kill easily

The funny thing is that the abridged series shows that SAO could be good if it was made by people who knew what they were doing

Kirito is one of those players that day one already has the games mechanics figured out. He's leapfrogged over the learning curve and surpassed the possible gains by anyone else. His overpoweredness is directly related to his capabilities as a gamer, that being, Long play sessions with little breaks, milestone mentality which permits him to schedule long grind sessions, and no social life to interrupt him. If you recall in episode 1, Kirito made a very big deal that he could help Klein, but only him, this is because handling a relationship with one person is easy, but the relationship with multiple people cuts into your grind time and slows down progress.
