OMG thank you so much for this! I love dramatic lighting in paintings and always struggled to literally paint the light beams and shadows on my normal painting layer. Of course I use overlay etc., twitch the levels, curves at the end of the process and work with masks through the painting but I never thought about using levels with masks for the lighting itself. You saved me so much future working hours on my pieces! Again thank you, much appreciated

You can also achieve subsuface scattering by using the "inner glow" effect on the lighting layer

I was looking for a tutorial how to make this, but in a way I can also do in traditional art. But I was flabbergasted during the whole video. This is so simple?! Time to open Photoshop.
