You're right on the names. Rob was trained in opera in college, but he hadn't sung any opera for about 15 years when they did this. Nessun Dorma is his dad's favorite piece. Austin's degree is in musical theater, but I do believe that included a couple classes in opera just for a good, rounded musical education. Austin had been wanting Rob to sing this for years, and finally talked him into it on the condition that Austin do it with him. They recorded their parts separately, and when Austin got Rob's, he had to go back and re-record his because he felt he hadn't done it well enough to match what Rob had done. I love these guys' friendship. They both admire each other so much, and it comes through in their performances.

Rob is a heroic tenor, Austin is a lyric tenor and they are both mind blowingly talented

You should do more Home Free. They can any sing genre and you are correct about Rob'
s background in opera. It was only at Austin's insistence that they did this song.

Austin did this to highlight Rob's talent.

It's not too often you get to hear harmony in a 'solo' opera piece, is it?

Rob had operatic training in college, while Austin's training was in Musical theater. You might be interested in Austin's cover of Bring Him Home

Austin wanted Rob to do this because he knew of Rob's training, but Rob refused to unless Austin joined him, so they both did months of study and practice.

I don't care what kind of singer you call them, they sing BEAUTIFULLY.

Other musicians have described Rob's voice (the one with the glasses) as more traditional and Austin's voice (the one with the long hair) as more of a crossover voice.

Home Free will surprise you at every turn. Their range of talents and skills within the group is phenomenal. This was wonderful and I'm so glad they did this and hoping they do more opera. Great reaction..

In an interview with Patrol Gaming, Austin said that he really wanted to show off "opera" Rob but Rob said he wouldn't do it unless Austin sang it with him. Austin went on to say that he thought he'd been okay but that Rob had been fantastic. I love the way they support each other and I think they were both terrific. Rob had extensive opera training but decided against a career in it. Austin had some but his degree is in Musical Theatre.

Great reaction! The best I've heard so far was from an Italian opera singer/reactor who said she not only forgot they weren't opera singers but she forgot they weren't Italian. Years ago Rob's vocal coach said he would have a huge career in opera. Thank God he joined Home Free.

There is in opera a thing called chiaro scuro or light and dark. Rob has a "darker" (richer) voice that reflects his opera trainng where Austin has a lighter, brighter voice, which reflects his musical theater training. Austin has a much higher placed head voice where Rob's is more forward. Both were absolutely magnificent.

Names are on point. Rob studied opera in college, meanwhile Austin studied musical theatre in college.

They were really nervous about this. They weren't sure if the fans would like it. Ha! I would call Rob a true opera tenor, while Austin is more of a lyric tenor.

Wanted to edit my last comment, but my phone isn't letting me! 😐. Wanted to add that there was no disparagement in their observations about Austin's being crossover mix of theatre and opera. Perfectly legitimate choice.

Such a treat! But seriously, Rob sounds like a different artist than we hear when he sings with Home Free!

I don't care for opera, but these two "tried" and did what I didn't expect--they made me want to watch it over and over again. Who knew? 🤭

That's interesting your say that about Rob because he sings Tenor for HF and normally sings with a totally different tone quality and placement. I think most people are surprised by Rob the most. Austin still sounds like himself. I think maybe you should listen to "End of the Road" to hear Rob's normal tenor voice again. I think you'll be surprised actually. Thanks for the video.

Austin does a solo of “Bring Him Home”. There are two videos out, one live with Home Free, and one recorded at home, accompanied by a piano. Look for the at home with piano version. In the live concert version, Austin was not feeling well, and doesn’t sound as strong.

Rob was trained in Opera and Austin learned it as a dare from Rob! They are so awesome!
