It's warning you that you really don't want to look under the hood.

My 2000 subaru needs oil every week. Hood latch works like a charm, and is still attached to my dashboard

Every GM since they discovered plastic, I had to replace so many plastic components from blinker switch mechanism inside the column, headlight switch, brights mechanism switch, glove box latch, window/lock trim, hazard switch, climate control buttons and various plastic exterior trim on my 1993 Regal 😂 it only had 122k miles when I replaced everything, and was well kept. It was reliable besides all the plastic/electric issues, I got 200k out of the car. But damn, so much broken plastic! The plastic within GMs doesn't age well. I don't see that extent of plastic issues even in the oldest Japanese cars. They could make a lot more solid, they choose not to. Now that the engines are covered in plastic, I wouldn't touch any GM product with a 10 foot pole.

Truthfully it's not even a GM problem it's a problem with all auto manufacturers it seems like every other year the build quality becomes worse, cheaper, and more difficult to fix. We're really doing the environment a favor especially with electric cars and their slave ore mines.

GM used to be a great manufacturer of cars but they definitely have fallen from the glory days. My dads 2015 Chevy Silverado had to have the transmission replaced at only 110, 000 miles! Seems like this is a common issue with new Chevrolet transmissions. Crazy because his 2008 didn't have that issue. Got 180k miles on it and still running strong when I sold it.

Same happens to my wife's Acadia Denali. Freaking ridiculous how much they charge and thin plastic holds this lever in place. The plastic broke. I shimmy it back in position purely for looks.

My 1994 first owner garage kept at 100k miles Toyota Land Cruiser had the same open hood latch came off.

On my Honda Element the hood latch just breaks off.

They do need to work on their quality control. I just purchased a new truck and it has paint defects and some missing bed trim.

FCA has the best fit/finish of the Big Three, ironically. Ford is getting much much better since Covid though, all of their refreshed vehicles are finished much nicer than even just a couple years ago

It’s not just GM. It’s ever manufacturer, all of it is computerized junk these days.

This has been going on for years, I'm shocked that people are just now surprised about this ...

I'd say that was "design engineering" quality.

Damn they brought back issues from the 199x buick lineup.

Yes you're right we used to own a GM Chevrolet that's the same thing that happened 😅 along with another host of issues.

Gm hasn't had quality interiors since the early 70 's. That's a fact. Ain't nothing wrong with quality plastics in a vehicle. Gm has been doing cheap plastics for decades.
Ford does better plastics, but their mechanicals have been suspect for quite some time.

After the low build quality in my old 2006 GMC Canyon, a2007 Buick Lucerne CXS, and a 2001 Chevy Silverado, I switched to Jeep and haven't looked back

The fact that the latch turn off the car doesn't prove anything. The fact their engines blow up at 30, 000 miles
