Harmonics in electrical installations: what are they, how are they measured and analyzed?

In this video we are going to study what harmonics are and what loads generate them. We are going to see the concept of linear and non-linear load. I will introduce the basic tool for the analysis of harmonics, that is, the Fast Fourier Transformation, thanks to which power quality analyzers will be able to decompose signals into fundamental components and harmonics. We will see how to measure each harmonic and also two parameters that will help us to have a more general vision such as the THD or Total Harmonic Distortion and the TDD or Total Demand Distortion. We will use the EN50160 and IEEE519 standards to set limits to these parameters. Finally, we will see how to use the Fluke 435 SII analyzer to study harmonics.

3:17 Not exactly true. The definition of a linear is not that which draws sinusoidal current when excited by a sinusoidal voltage. The definition is if it satisfies the superposition principle.

There are linear loads that draw non-sinusoidal current when excited by a sinusoidal voltage. Example: linear time-variant loads.

For some reason in Power Engineering, they say linear loads are those that draw sinusoidal current. But the definition of "linear" based on superposition is consistent with the definition used in Signals & Systems, in Differential Equations for linear ODEs, and in Linear Algebra for linear transformations. So it is clear the definition used in Power Engineering is the one which seems wrong, since it is inconsistent with many other branches of science.

If you want to refer to a load that draws sinusoidal current when excited by a sinusoidal voltage, that load is linear time-invariant (LTI). If you want to refer to a load that draws non-sinusoidal current when excited by a sinusoidal voltage, that load is non-LTI (either because it is non-linear and/or because it is time-variant).

4:05 Note: Fourier did not invent the FFT algorithm.

4:57 In a cycloconverter, the fundamental cyclic frequency of the current is not 50 nor 60 Hz.

6:42 Actually, the frequency spectrum consists of two graphs. The one shown in the video was the amplitude spectrum (normalized). The missing graph is the phase spectrum.

item 1, 2, 3, 4, 7, 10, 11 rather this is the correct control tolerance specification or not ?
I am not sure it that any tolerance control tolerance specification for item 5, 6, 8, 9 ?
Parameter Calculation method Specification
1)THC(A)
<5%
2)I-THD(%)
<15%
3)POHC(A)
≤ 0.251
4)POHC Limit(A)
≤ 0.251
5) V_RMS(Volts)
6)I_Peak(Amps)
7)I_Fund(Amps) <5%
8)Power (Watts)
9) I_RMS(Amps)
10) Crest Factor ≤ 20%
11) Power Factor ≤ 20%

Hello sir, Thankyou so much for this wonderful video, I would like to know that as at 10:40 you mentioned that THD for current distortion does not give clear vision in comparison with TDD, can you please explain me more, as i m doing a project and in my project tdd is under limit but thdi is 48 percent, will it be acceptable according to ieee standards?

Hello, I just want to ask, what is order in harmonics? And why every time the order comes up, the multiplier of the frequency goes up according to what order they're in?
