This was cool thanks.
I might try to make that for my niece. She's a big Harry Potter fan.
I also thought if there were a long tube that stretches from the tip of the wand to your finger tips, (with the wand in the centre of the tube) then the wire could be attached to that, and you could spin the tube with your finger tips and the feather would go up and down (without having to rotate your wrist.)

Just some ideas:
1 ) Use hand files to shape your wand, saver and easier than using a power tool or a knive. A round file works fine, a triangular file helps for details.
2) Have two identical wands, one gimmick-ed for the feather and a plain wand you use before and after you do the levitation. Humans are wired for "object permanence", for the audience there is only one wand.
This works for other stuff too, the idea that you just switched a object for a gimmick never crosses their minds. Have a rather suspicious looking Ace of spades? Just have them handle a normal one first and the gimmicked card magically disappears from view.
