Climate emergency: Record heatwave sparks wildfires in Europe

Greece is battling one of the worst wildfire seasons in recent years, with thousands evacuated, and homes and livelihoods destroyed.
It has been driven by extreme heat experienced across Mediterranean coastal areas.
A study by World Weather Attribution said the conditions around the heatwave would be virtually impossible without anthropogenic climate change.

Al Jazeera's Jonah Hull reports.

The Greek government failed to contain the fire. Now it’s out of control.

It’s not because of climate change!!

It was hotter in 2007 and even hotter in 1977 (46 YEARS ago) 🤭

are the climate emergency and heatwaves sparking wildfires or are ALL of these fires sparking the climate emergency and heatwaves/domes?

"i" have wondered for a long time now if these "wildfires" are not wild at ALL but are intentionally set to create massive amounts of quick emissions assisting in the creation of intentional heatwaves/domes? "problem, reaction, solution" for "power and control" purposes?

the earth can and will filter itself out like it always has if "we" will just allow it to. "the solution to pollution is dilution"

"i" have also thought since the earlier 2k's that it is cyclical as well and that that factor would most definitely be taken into great consideration in the planning and implementation of such a thing. "i" do believe it is possible that ALL of this is being manipulated and is intentional.

"i" do believe it is "human-caused" with many contributing factors working ALL together synergistically... but may it possibly be intentionally manipulated as well? "problem reaction, solution"? "power and control"? "we" ALL should know by now that "they" "never let a crisis scenario go to waste"

"i" Love "you" ALL
"my" best wishes thoughts prayers and meditations for ALL

So a fire is starting with 115f heat? don't think so

The African heat wave is only in southern Europe (as always in July and August), in central and northern Europe it is quite cool!

The sad part is that many fires has a lot to do with people creating the fire to burn weeds and prepare land for next crop of new season. Since is so hot July and August and so dry once it’s out of control those that started the🔥 go into hiding. Few years ago in Sicily the sky was so dark thought it was a storm meanwhile was smoke so thick coming from mountains of Palermo. Very sad situation. So I know it’s no climate change. 🙏🏻🙏🏻🙏🏻🙏🏻🙏🏻🙏🏻to all those that were affected in those fires.

No national temperature records have been broken in Europe in July with the exception of Albania. Rome was supposed to have broken its, but it didn't. Greece was nowhere near its record of 48°C set way back in 1977. IPCC only has medium confidence ( that's a 50-50) that weather conditions that promote wildfires (fire weather) have become more probable in southern Europe over the last century. Note that annual Global Wildfire Carbon Emissions have been declining dramatically since 2003, with 2022 being the lowest on record (Copernicus).
There is nothing unusual about the fire season in Europe. There's no trend for wildfires in Greece.

Jim Skea, the new head of the UN's IPCC, said it's not helpful to imply that a temperature rise of 1.5° Celsius is an existential threat to humanity.
quote “The world won’t end if it warms by more than 1.5°, ”

Five days after this bull, Europe is in a cold wave with a negative temperature anomalies. Frosts are forecast for southern Germany, and people will need to put their heating on in August. Cool, damp and dull for the foreseeable future.

As the climate heads into greater extremes globally, how can we best deal with future climate crises?
The short answer is that we cannot deal with them unless we take care of nature's inner balance.
We live in a tightly-closed and interdependent system in which everything boomerangs back to us. While living in such a system, we need to reconsider what we want and think, and how we treat each other, because our human connections are the primary influence on how nature responds to us.
It is common to think that climate is dependent on factors outside of us—whether it be balances between heat and cold in the environment, or the effects of various kinds of pollution we emit—because we lack a complete picture of how our attitudes to each other bring about the strongest responses from nature toward us.
No creature distorts nature the way that we people do. And it is not simply a matter of switching to renewable energy sources, electric cars and the like; it is a matter of how we relate to each other.
If we truly wish to witness more balance throughout nature and not have to deal with all kinds of cold waves and other natural disasters, then similarly to how we have electricity, water and gas meters in our homes, we should also have meters that count how much evil we emit into the world from our negative attitudes to each other. What I mean is that if we could feel the extent to which we emit negative forces into the world, which negatively ricochet back to us, then we would wish to change this negative driver within us. We would want to switch it to a drive that makes our human connections positive, and which harmonizes us with nature.
In simple terms, when we get up in the morning, we should first and foremost consider what we need to do in order for all people to have it good. Developing such an attitude is not so simple, yet we will need to seriously work on it as we head into the future. A life of increasing blows from nature or a life of peace and harmony depends on the extent to which we impact a shift in our attitudes to each other—from negative to positive.
