What Is Your Downswing Trigger? (You Better Have One)

➜ Learn A Powerful, Effortless, Pain-Free Golf Swing:

Do you have downswing trigger? You better have one. This is what you should be using to hit every shot. It is something you use to fire your legs and hips. There are many different downswing triggers I teach so you need to choose one.

Most golfers are literally just whacking away at the ball solely with their arms. If you are doing this how are you ever going to use your body to hit the ball? You never will. To get using your body you nee to be thinking of using your body. This is where the downswing trigger comes in.

Again, this is something from your waist down you use to hit the ball. In this tip, I show the easiest downswing trigger. The one that most of my students choose. It's your belt buckle and thinking of turning it to hit your shots. So you have this thought of turning your belt buckle in your mind before you even start back. Once you hit the top you immediately turn the belt buckle or you immediately apply your downswing trigger. Once you fire the lower body the arms now follow.

So give this downswing trigger a try. It's vital you even have a thought of something from the waist down that gets you hitting the golf ball. If you are at least thinking about using your legs and hips you are on your way to doing so.

I spent 18 years in the golf business. I employed PGA professionals. Do not listen to Youtube swing instructors, EXCEPT this man, Paul Wilson

Fantastic belt buckle drill, this has transformed my game. I now feel less arms and more legs and hips. Thank you for the tips

You've transformed my game for the first time in my life I shot 2 rounds in the 70s within the same week.

I wish that when I started learning golf, 30+ years ago, the teacher would have taught me like this. I'm trying to adjust and it's going on great. Now my son-in-law wants to play and first thing i told him, watch Paul Wilson's videos if you want to play great golf. Thanks a lot, Paul, always a pleasure to learn new things with you.

This feeling finally clicked!! I been trying to implement the body swing for years and could never do it. I finally feel loose and keeping the finally throughout the swing. For years I was tense up and the belt buckle for me works best. I tried the one using the feet and that was harder for me. It's still not perfect, but if I had 10 balls now, 8 or 9 will be great contact. Thank You for continuing to put out the best golf material. I have tried everything and nothing wrong. Stack n tilt didn't work, only this. So thank you, thank you, THANK YOU!!!

My trigger used to be straightening my left leg, which I picked up from your Swing Machine Golf series back in 2007. As I got older and began lifting my left heel on the backswing, my trigger now is to simply replant that heel to start the downswing. I think that’s the easiest trigger for those of us who lift the lead heel going back.

i plant my left heel and turn my hips at the same time. thanks for all your tips.

Just turned 65. Shot 71 in 1-day tournament, finished T-1. I haven't mastered the Paul Wilson method, but I'm enjoying getting there.

Your belt back to ball drill was game changer for me.

My downswing trigger is right knee forward. It helps me subconsiously do the belt buckle method you are showing. If i think about triggering the hips, my knees are doing straight and stiff and i end up just turning the hips alone lol.

Paul the body swing is fantastic. Sorry to fan boi so much but my irons have arrived brother. Not one round but over 20. Sure I over draw when I stall and top drives when I have too many drinks but the game is becoming fantastic and that relaxed back swing and powerful swing is tremendous.

Here is my conclusion.

Hips with powerless arms == low point control, lag, and compression.

I think this is what I need. I’ve had too many inputs to just swing the club. From shoulder tilt to lateral hip movement. And I think just having the lower body trigger will help me. Gotta try it!

Such a valuable piece of instruction Paul! I have been doing this for years - especially as someone who, like many golfers when they first start, casted the club, i.e. swung from the top - which is the death move. My swing thought is "right hip smooth" (the "smooth" part is because I tend to have a long arm swing, and if I fire my right hip too fast, may arms can't keep up, and my swing gets disconnected). FWIW, my driver swing thought is the only one that's different - it's "left hip toward target" because I want to feel the left hip PULL my body forward, and since I'm swinging harder with the driver, my right side rotates somewhat naturally. If I use "right hip" on my driver, I sometimes don't make any lateral move and I tend to come over the top... (this is also because my set up is different for all the other clubs vs. the driver, i.e. I have more weight on my left side at set up with clubs other than driver, i.e. I'm trying to promote a more descending strike than I am with the driver)

Of all the instruction that is out there in the YouTube sphere, etc., this is certainly one of the best, especially for the high to middle handicap player (i.e. 90% of all golfers)...

I definitely need a trigger. I used to use my heel drop but somewhere along the way I stopped. Thanks for the reminder and your refreshing approach to golf ! Do you plan to post more videos soon ? You are missed.

It was not my best round of golf yesterday.
I was chasing my swing. I couldn't find the ball.
I was trying to find the sweetspot.
I was thinking about my swing instead of just swinging.
I was using my lower body to start my swing. I tried everything..it wasn't terrible.
It's wasn't pretty.
It was golf.
I'm not giving up on this at all, Paul...
I did do what you said. I waited till my Buddy hit a nice shot and paid him the compliment.
He didn't stop completely.
Alex got it yesterday.
Alex has respect for us older guys.
It didn't keep him from slamming his clubs into his bag a few times.
I will let David and Alex know about the compliment idea.
I'm saving the other one for myself.
I actually wanted to try it out yesterday for an experiment.
The Dirty Pool will have to wait 4rrr. another day.
The compliment Worked on him... no real reason to mess him up even though I wasn't playing well.

Paul - how about thinking “touch the knees” for your downswing trigger?
