Here is a surprising bit of wisdom courtesy of the most notorious group of Greek vagabond philosophers, the Epicureans.

Epicurus observed that when people gained more and more material goods, they did not seem to get any more happy. Once they could reliably feed themselves, had a roof over their head, and had a small collection of good friends, nothing they gained seemed to make them any happier.

Epicurus had accurately identified the phenomenon of hedonic adaptation, where beyond having their bare necessities covered, people very quickly adapt to new material fortune, and it loses its ability to make them happy.

If you don’t know this, you could spend your whole life chasing things that will never make you happy….good job you watched this then, really.

What if chasing things that make you happy is the very thing that makes you happy? I am currently enjoying the chase. I suspect you may be right that after I accomplish my goals, I my happiness will start to fade. It has happened before. However, that is where the new chase begins and the new fun starts.

Epicures lived in a time where all you could buy was land, food, wine, and humans. Not sure he'd feel the same if he knew about a world like today and all the things you can do and own.
