Trump's 'Adhocracy' Could Leave the World in Disarray

“This is going to be a much messier world that the next president is going to have to deal with,” says Council on Foreign Relations President, Richard Haass. Hasn't it always been in disarray?

I agree with Richard Haass's assessment. All I'd note is that events, of course, could ultimately play out in a number of different ways. One apparent feature of President Trump's adhocracy is that it's almost by nature often unreliable. This is an extremely undesirable trait for an ally. Consequently, long-time allies (eg, those in Western Europe) could ultimately decide to treat the USA as one would any undependable friend and lessen their reliance on us. Ironically, they may actually grow stronger and more self-reliant as the USA finds itself increasingly isolated. Because nature, and probably international relations as well, abhors a vacuum, some other power or group of powers will probably supplant the United States on different fronts. We may already be seeing this with China and Europe possibly taking the lead in fighting climate change. This world may or may not be more fractious than it is now, but it will be one where the USA's presence is greatly diminished. Of course, this would be a very bad outcome because the world needs a champion of liberal democratic values that also has some punch, economically and militarily. This is especially true now, when democracy and the rule of law seem to be under attack in many parts of the world.
