How to Clean and Re-Tin your Soldering Iron | Galco

Your cleaning method will vary based on the status of your soldering iron whether it is currently hot or cold.
If your iron is dirty, but still hot, set it aside and allow it to heat for about 90 seconds or so. After heating, you should see some brown deposits on the tip of the iron, known as rosin. All you need to do is take your iron and flick the tip onto the damp sponge. Contact with the wet sponge should cause the solder to contract at a different rate than the iron, which will help remove globs of solder that are clinging to the tip.
If your iron is cold and dirty, it may not be able to heat up properly, even if you tried to follow the previous method. If this is the case, then unplug the iron and allow it to cool if necessary so you do not ignite the sandpaper. Once cooled, lightly scuff the surface of the tip with your sandpaper until it regains some luster, taking care to remove just the oxidation and not the metal itself.
It is usually a good idea to tin the tip after cleaning by allowing a thin coating of solder to cover the tip of the iron. This will protect the iron from oxidation. This can generally be done with a low temperature solder so that the iron can cool quickly, rather than frying it back onto the tip.
