Timur the Lame, Helmuth von Moltke, Gustav Adolph of Sweden, Mehmed the Conqueror, Yi Sun-Sin, all those generals changed warfare forever, and yet most people don't talk about them.

Khalid Ibn Walid deserves to be mentioned. Literally named sword of god due to his reputation for being an excellent commander, showing great military prowess and being a formidable warrior.

What??? Shaka Zulu doesn’t even get an honourable mention? He was arguably the greatest warrior in Africa who created tactics that helped the Zulu nation defeat the British!

Frederick the Great...

When Napoleon visited his crypt, he told one of his marshalls, "if this man were alive today, you and I would not be here."

Subotai is always missed. Genghis Khan and the Mongol empire wouldn't have been what it was without him. Conquered more territory than any other commander in history.

I have 2 more.

Galvarino was a Mapuche warrior, located what is now Chile and Argentina. He was captured by the Spanish and his hands were cut off. He was sent back to his tribe as an example to end a war. Instead he rallied his tribe, was given command of a squadron, had knives tied to his stumps and went into battle. He was eventually captured again and hanged.

Honda Tadakatsu was a daimyo in Japan during the sengoku era. He was in 57 battles without suffering a significant wound. He was often called “the warrior who surpassed death”. Oda Nobunaga, who didn’t often give praise, called him “A samurai among samurai”. Toyotomi Hideyoshi called him the greatest samurai in the East.

Guan Yu, a chinese general who was named the God of War ! He leads his mens at the battle of Chang Ban to protect civilians and stops Cao Cao soldiers with less soldiers. Even today, temples are dedicated to him (He lived around the years 200).

I'm offended. Not even a mention of Yi Sun-sin? He is the only admiral in history to fight as many battles as him and never lose. He won a naval engagement with 13 ships against 133 and another one with 33 ships against 300. Not only are those impossible odds he beat, but he NEVER LOST A SINGLE SHIP. He is, undeniably, the greatest military commander who has ever lived.

Jan Zizka, outnumbered and leading peasants against knights, he was blind in one eye and never lost a battle using completely unconventional tactics to defeat far superior foes.

One of the key points you didn't mention in relation to Alexander is how he conducted himself in battle. He may have been the king/General/commander but unlike many others in that role he always led his troops into battle rather than sitting further back. Thus putting himself more directly in the conflict and combat. If I remember right there is one recorded conflict where he was the 1st to scale a wall of a city and as the most obvious target took a spear to the chest. He would survive this although by all accounts whatever damage was done to his lungs by this would leave him with a raspy voice for the remainder of his life.

From India I would like to put Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj. He was a great king and military commander. Even today movies, streets, etc are named after him in India. I know he is not world famous but I just thought he should be mentioned because of how cool he was
