As the COVID-19 pandemic continues, how is this unprecedented crisis impacting how we address climate changing moving forward?

With COVID-19 disease sweeping the world, countries have implemented lockdowns and shelter-in-place orders. More than 1.9 million people have been infected and more than 110,000 people have died around the world. In addition to the loss of lives, COVID-19 has destabilized the economy and upended society as we know it. But the efforts to contain the virus have also had a notable impact on the environment.

In this One Small Step, Lucy speaks with 2 experts, climate economist and political scientist Gernot Wagner and environmental policy expert Leah Stokes, to find out more about how the novel coronavirus pandemic is impacting the environment.

What about the impact due to increased production, use, and distribution of PPE?

the environmental impact of this pandemic also includes disposal of all types of PPE, take out containers and plastic bags.
here in Hong Kong, after SARS in 2003, everything is wrapped in plastic until maybe 4 years ago when people start to be aware of the damage of single-use plastics. When coronavirus is first started happening here in Feb, everything is wrapped in plastic again. And we started wearing surgical masks since the end of Jan. Imagine all the plastic we created just in a few months.

We should definitely talk about climate change. Even if it is not the top priority right now, we can learn a lot from talking with other experts and learn a lot from this videos.

Venice canals- not a good example. That wasn’t a pollution reduction, that was due to less sediment being stirred up. There may have been a small decrease in pollution (eg fewer fuel leaks from motorized craft) but probably negligible

The exponential impact of Covid on us is similar to our exponential impact on the Environement. Reversing the way we fight the virus to address the climate and biodiversity crisis may teach a way to reduce our negative impact efficiently.

Im definitely not against reducing CO2 emissions and all that stuff, but if you want to do that, you either build nuclear power stations or you dont get clean energy. The lack of efficiency, the space requirement, the cost and all the other downsides that common renewable energies have, just make them not worth it. To sustain a future world with these renewable sources is just a childs dream. We need nuclear power, the sooner people understand that and stop fearing it just because the word is scary, the sooner you will get your green world.

P.S. The state of the economy after the lockdown will be disastrous. Countries cant invest into anything green. You HAVE to wait. In the meantime, promote nuclear power.

I like everything about this video except when they showed a Toyota Prius plug-in hybrid. Toyota is anti-EVs, they spread misinformation about EVs while promoting their non-plugin hybrids as "self-charging hybrid". They should get no free promotion in a video like this, they are a long way away from the company that introduced the original Prius.
