Just finished a chaplet of St. Gertrude for the Poor Souls. I am the last Mass attending Catholic in my mostly Protestant family. I fast for them almost daily, abstaining from Meat, trusting in the Goodness of Our Lady of Sorrows to use my small sacrifices.

Lord have mercy!! I am the greatest of all sinners.. but please do not deal with me as I truly deserve, rather look at the greatness of Thy unfathomable Mercy & from its depths, draw me out of my misery & help me pay my debts from this moment on, until they are all expiated when you call you me. May I help others too in order to accomplish this together with the immaculate heart of Thy Mother. Amen

Eternal Father, I offer Thee the most precious blood of Thy Beloved So, Jesus, in union with the Masses said throughout the world today, for all the Holy Souls in purgatory, for sinners everywhere, for sinners within the universal Church, those within my own home & family. Amen

Hail Holy Queen, Mother of Mercy, our life, our sweetness and our hope. To thee do we cry poor banished children of Eve. To thee do we send up our sighs, mourning and weeping in this valley of tears. Turn then most gracious advocate thine eyes of mercy toward us, and after this, our exile, show unto us the blessed fruit of thy womb, Jesus. Oh clement, oh loving, oh sweet Virgin Mary. Pray for us oh Holy Mother of God, that we be made worthy of the promises of Christ. Amen.

Wow! What great joy to pray for souls in purgatory! What a devotion to be called to!

I pray a couple Hail Mary's a day for the souls in purgatory. There are orders praying for them twenty four hours a day!!!

I think there is a church in Paris with mass all day everyday. Your whole life, my whole life, for centuries, you go about your day, mass is constantly being said for the souls in purgatory.

Instill a great joy for this devotion in the younger generations. My grandma always wanted a grandson to become a priest for this very reason. 😅

I think if one suddenly seen God the soul would feel elevated enveloped in infinite goodness and infinite living Love Who is the Holy Spirit and the soul would be in awe thinking in itself "so good so good" but then would realize God is infinite holiness and what is unclean should not come near the Light of infinite goodness who is God because it is very unpleasant for God to be near what is unclean and one may think who is good enough to stand before God who is infinite holiness, purity and goodness. It seems to be impossible to be good enough to stand before God.

O most beautiful flower of Mount Carmel, fruit of the vine, splendorous of Heaven, Blessed Mother of the Son of God. Immaculate Virgin, assist me in this my necessity. O Star of the Sea help me and show me herein you are my Mother. O Holy Mary, Mother of God, Queen of Heaven and earth, I humbly beseech you from the bottom of my heart to succour me in my necessity. There are none that can withstand your power. O show me here you are my Mother. O Mary conceived without sin pray for us who have recourse to Thee (3 times). Holy Mary I place this cause in your hands (3 times). Thank you for your mercy towards me and mine.

Amen.

This prayer must be said for three days and after that the request will be granted and the prayer must be published. J.M.T. (Replace J.M.T. with YOUR initials.)

Purgatory is an established integral part of Roman Catholic religious doctrine and catechesis. None of the other Christian denominations accept the existence of Purgatory.
However, the definition of Purgatory into three, distinct levels is not official Roman Catholic catechesis. But it is NOT considered heresy. It is considered HETERODOX.
Heterodox means a religious teaching or belief in the Roman Catholic definition that is not heresy but, MAYBE. As an example, the belief that dead, unbaptized babies go to heaven is a heterodox belief. The Roman Catholic Church's stance on that is, "We do not know. But we trust in the compassion and mercy of God." So if you want to believe that dead unbaptized babies go to heaven, you can do so.
The belief of Purgatory divided into three, distinct levels defined by the decedent's state of grace upon death dates back to a Roman Catholic female saint. She preached that she was given a tour of Purgatory by St. Gabriel and shown the three distinct levels and the souls inhabiting them. She said she was surprised to see a large number of religious persons, including past popes, in the second level of Purgatory. Evidently God is very strict on the religious persons. Once they have committed themselves to the service of God and have taken oaths and promises, God holds them to a strict, high standard of conduct, behavior, and performance. Failing that, they receive a stricter sentence of Purgatory.
Purportedly, the first level of Purgatory entails the shortest time spent there. There is no suffering except the longing and desire to be united with God in Heaven, of which they can see, so close but yet so far away. First level is inhabited by dead baptized babies, baptized children under the age of seven, and very saintly people and holy people. As you might expect, few of us will qualify.
The Second Level is the generic level where the vast majority of baptized souls will spent time expiating their residual venal sins. Reputedly, time in the second level can range from years to decades, even more. Still, not too much is known. Lumped into the second level are people who were very good and died in the friendship and grace of the Lord. They will spend anywhere from years to decades. There are also the good people who did not observe their religious obligations with the Lord and were lukewarm in their faith. Still, they lived pretty much good lives and were decent to their fellow man. They have a lot of venal sins in their past as they did not avail themselves of the Sacrament of Penance. So they died distant to God. They will spend decades in Purgatory.
The Third Level is a nightmare. It is representative of hell, but without the demons and the torments they inflict. Time spent in the third level can range up to centuries. According to one anecdote, there's an Italian village girl in the third level condemned to exist there until the end of time when Christ returns to judge the living and the dead. I don't know what she did to incur this sentence. You'll supposedly find souls there that you thought would have gone to hell but by some miracle or intercession, avoided damnation, by a hair's breadth. The third level is indicative of God's fervent desire to save as many human souls as He can, still desiring that all who still believe even with a whisker of faith can still be saved.
There used to be a Roman Catholic belief in the existence of a place called, LIMBO, but it is not taught any more. Limbo was a convenient place for the repository of deceased persons, who did not qualify for heaven but were not evil enough to incur damnation. But Limbo was no desirable place to be for eternity. It's only upside was that there was no darkness or fire, there were no demons there and no suffering or torments. Yet Limbo residents suffered the despair of never being joined in Heaven with God. Limbo itself was its own form of damnation. Limbo should have its own entrance sign, "Despair all ye who enter here, there is no Heaven for thee forever."
There seems to be some belief that there is the phenomenon of, time dilation, in Purgatory. A human soul, with the permission of God, can ask the living for Masses to be said in its name. This shortens its time in Purgatory. If the living respond with a Mass the following Sunday, the waiting soul in Purgatory will experience weeks having gone by before the Mass being said.
Whether you believe or not, if you are a Roman Catholic, prepare to spend some time in Purgatory after death. But while you live, you can shorten that time considerably by living a clean spiritual life, going to Mass and especially confession regularly, and making expiation if needed. You're not asked to be a saint because many saints started off as sinners. Jesus himself said that He came to redeem the sinful with salvation. The very good and holy were already saved. God knows you and I are far from perfect and He expects we will stray. The point is that we are aware of our shortcomings and pray for forgiveness and do our best to lead spiritually clean lives from a religious, moral, and ethical choice and refrain from sinful decisions and choices. Remember Jesus' admonition to the adulterous woman he saved from stoning. He forgave her and told her, "Woman, go and sin no more." His injunction applies to all of us. Do your best, your very best.

I tend to think devotions to the Precious Blood of Jesus hold great benefit for the poor souls. I advise three devotions in particular.

1) The Te Deum
2) The Litany of the Precious Blood
3) When the chalice is raised during the consecration at Mass say silently "Be mindful Oh Lord of Thy creature whom Thou has redeemed by Thy most Precious Blood"

All three of these are indulgenced and can be applied to the poor souls.

Masses offered and the St. Gertrude prayer (not indulgenced but approved) are very important as well.
