Tesla Superchargers open up - First Real World Test Non-Tesla! - Volkswagen ID.3

Tesla has finally opened up their Supercharger-network for non-Tesla cars. They're currently running a pilot with 10 locations in The Netherlands. I went to visit the Breukelen Supercharger location with a Volkswagen ID.3, to find out how hard it is to charge a non-Tesla car.

Note: battery was at 85%, so no real charging speed test in this video, might do a video on that later.

And.... you occupy two stalls without even noticing it. :D

About the stall and bay blocking: In the video I already addressed the fact that non-Tesla's have different charge port locations, but I guess I should have elaborated on it a bit more in detail, so here's my two cents:

You have to realise that this is a pilot and that Tesla is inviting non-Tesla owners to come and try it out. Hard to blame non-Tesla owners that Tesla chargers are hard to reach with a non-Tesla. Obviously most EV's don't have their charge port in the same location as a Tesla, only a handful have.

But this is one of the reasons to do a pilot, it's not like Tesla isn't aware of this issue. My guess is that Tesla will find a way (adapter anyone?). Tesla never starts a experiment without really wanting to make it work (RIP Battery Swap Pilot Program) and this project is especially interesting for them, because it will be a huge milestone if it works out (and much $$$).

So, do you like Tesla opening up the Supercharger network? Will it work or do you think the different charge port locations on non-Tesla's are gonna be too big of a problem?

Personally, I think this move by Tesla an opening up of their network is in part to do with the overwhelming demand of their new cars. Making superchargers available to non Tesla motors will spread the demand of new cars while giving Tesla a new business income stream.

as a Tesla owner living in USA, i charge 99% of the time at home. Before we actually took delivery of the Model Y performance we had an electrician come to our home and install a Tesla Charger in the garage. Only in emergencies i use the superchargers

Genius move Tesla, they will rule the EV market with sales and charging. WIN-WIN for us shareholders. Tesla will need to build MORE SuperChargers to meet the new demand. But that CSS Frankenplug is HUGE.

This is very cool. I have no interest in owning a Tesla but lots of interest in using their excellent charging network.

That's great! For all the people saying the charging infrastructure is poor, almost all those charging bays were empty...

All the manufacturers now need to standardise where the charging port is located on their cars.

As a Tesla owner, i can see short term problems, but with the extra cash tesla will get, I'm sure they can manage to get longer charge cables. or if they pick the supercharger locations with the largest amount of stalls, maybe they could have a dedicated section for VW. ID4/3 eTron, and any other car that will block 2 stalls, maybe better markings /directions on the ground at the stalls etc.
Might be difficult in the middle of next summer 2022, when non tesla drivers just have to pay 13 euros for one month only for holiday road trips etc, this is when i can see issues with queuing.
wont be long before we see a youtube video of a fight between tesla and non tesla driver trying to charge in a busy July :) ( only joking)

Tesla will be tripling its Supercharger Network soon. They are the best chargers in my opinion.

I think this is so cool. Hats off to Tesla

So.... if there are only two stalls available, are you going to still charge and render the other bay non-usable🤔, effectively blocking two stalls?

As a Tesla shareholder and UK Model 3 driver, I'm really happy Tesla is offering this. It's good for the EV mission, it's reasonably priced, and it helps pay for further expansion of the network.

Friends who are travelling together on an EV road trip can charge at the Tesla station with confidence and stay together if they have a mixture of EVs including non-Teslas.

Tesla will be careful to expand this only to locations that have extra capacity based on their data. So I'm not too worried about delays charging. I've never had to wait to charge after two years of owning and only about 40 Supercharger sessions. The same cannot be said for other public charging networks I've used!

My hope is that Tesla will add a feature to the app that enables plug and play for those cars that support it. Maybe after starting the charge through the app you could click a button that enables this. Then next time you pull up to any Supercharger that is in the shared public network, you don't need the app to start the charge.

I really hope Tesla will open up here in Northern Sweden soon. The charging network up here is not so good, so that would really make things easier. At all the Tesla-stations I see, the stalls are empty and then I have to drive around and try to find a non-tesla charger.

To compare to an ICE-situation. It would be really weird if you could only fill up gas at certain locations for certain car brands.

Subscription is a no-brainer as only 1 charge for about 60kWh is necessary per month to be cheaper with it as without it.

As an Id.3 owner, I'm hoping Tesla opens up the rest of the network too. They have excellent infrastructure, which would give more options when traveling longer distances.

Tesla said that when the supercharger is too crowded that non-tesla's wont be able to charge. I don't know what that treshold will be, but that should avoid situations in ehich Tesla owners won't be able to charge.

Surely the parking bay is Teslas problem? Once they’ve opened it up and started charging a monthly fee then everybody has the same right to charge there!!

Nice info. Would be interesting to know at what speed the ID.3 can charge at the Super Charger.

Now if only other EV charging companies could make their user experiences this smooth.
