When you destroy tge head of a piston while the head is extending, you are left with the base. You can do this with either explosions or another headless piston (or cursed pistons, like this).
This is not completely useless, because using headless pistons, you can retract things instantly, so instant 2×2 pistons doors are possible.

The piston or all game object in Minecraft are stored in an array, so when you make an action it will loop and execute object in the first index in order. So technically we can’t make piston retract at the same time. If you make piston facing parallel to each other it look exactly retracting at the same time because the game loop are synchronized at the same fps or game tick.

Fun fact: someone made a mod once that adding in extra pistons into the game. One that extended 2 blocks, another that went 3 blocks, another by 4 blocks, and I think the last one extended 5 blocks.
