It never occurred to me that there are architects whose job it is to design sci-fi buildings and structures for films. This is so cool!

For those who don't know, Elysium is the name of one of the classical greek afterlife realms and was for the ones who had done something significant or was a hero in their lives.

Your blend of architectural competence and sci-fi fan nerd is honestly a breath of fresh air.

This was an interesting video that reminded me of the approach taken to developing the ships and stations within the show "The Expanse". They applied the same level of construction to these things so that they could be as believable as possible in a physical sense. Fantastic show.

And that is why I'll forever be grateful to Syd Mead's mind for existing on this Earth. Man was the precursor of every sci-fi aesthetic you can think of. Made Blade Runner, made Elysium, made Tron, hell he even designed the Head Suitcase of Mission Impossible. He called fiction "reality ahead of schedule" and will always be one of my favorite people on this world.

As cool as the concept is, the constant thought of the artificial atmosphere malfunctioning and everyone dying would be way too terrifying for my taste.

I remember reading an article/interview from the director of this movie saying he wished he could remake it to go into more detail about the lives of people who lived on Elysium and why things were done they way they were.

While trying to learn how to write about fictitious civilizations I find your outlook very edifying indeed. It's nice to know a mind so illuminated by ergonomics and cultural influence.

Neill Blomkamp is one of the most underrated directors ever.

This concept has been mined several times in science fiction most notably by Larry Niven in his "Ringworld" and related stories. In and of itself it's a modification of a concept called a Dyson Sphere.

These kinds of structures like Halo and Elysium were inspired by the Book Ringworld by Larry Niven. The Ringworld was a ring structure built around a star that was 1 million miles wide and orbited its star at roughly the same distance as Earth from the Sun. It won the Hugo award for Best Science Fiction Novel in 1970.
