Hi there, 28:24 part b

Why is S (displacement) positive 0.5?

B is going downwards so displacement should be negative, acceleration positive because gravity acts downwards?

I am really confused when to put displacement and acceleration as +ve or -ve. Please explain sir, ty ❤
