Practical content. Liked it. Perhaps it is a good moment to refresh this topic, as of Proxmox 7 backups offer retention schedules, which can be bit confusing to set up, without little understanding of distinction between various schedules... Little bit similar to Hyper Backup schedule on DSM now, but not incremental and therefore can drain backup storage space quickly when the DSM logic is applied to schedules...

Great video! One question, what is the functional difference between Snapshots and Backups (besides the ability to move the backups off of the Proxmox server)? The terms seem to be used interchangeably by most.

When I backup my Plex which runs under Ubuntu on Proxmox. The backup also tries to backup my PlexMedia which is a local attached SCSI disk to the VM. How do I remove this disk from the backup cycle. As it's 8TB of movies I don't want to back up each time.

Did you have any issues with the Backup mode called "snapshot"? There are two other options you can chosse like "stop". It will shutdown the vm and then back it up.

Which one do you recommend? I had some problems with inconsistant data and not being able to restore the backup made in snapshot mode. Do you know if I maybe did something wrong?

Does a snapshot save your data? Doesn't appear so since it's almost instant. Does a back up save all your drives data?

Can't tell you how many "oh shit" moments were followed by relief when restoring from a snapshot. I'm also big on keeping VM backups. If you want to expand your Proxmox setup to include another node and get some clustering-availability sets setup then it's nothing to just add the VM over to the new server from a backup.

Your information isn't quite correct. You can winscp any backups from a local drive onto another proxmox hosts local storage (vzdump folder) and restore the VM.
