Experts warn AI could lead to human ‘extinction’

Hundreds of pioneers in artificial intelligence signed a short statement warning that their technology could pose a “risk of extinction” to humanity on par with nuclear war. The New York Times’ Kevin Roose weighs in.

They can't even regulate social media. The effects of AI technology will be ubiquitous, all-encompassing and impossible to regulate.

The real danger is when (not if) it's applied to weapons systems, and the AI has a "delusion" or other malfunction. A handful of humans disobeying orders have stopped nuclear war in the past because they had a "feeling" that there was a false alarm, or that they did not want to be responsible for the end of the world. AI has no such feeling or qualms.

I have consistently felt a strong urge to pursue wisdom and authority to make a positive impact on humanity. I've been actively searching for ways to gain influence and expand my understanding of the human race and uncover knowledge that isn't accessible to everyone. People need to be held accountable for what they create. It seems to me that the severity of this warning about extinction could be, in part, another way to shirk responsibility by minimizing less extreme outcomes. Claiming some software entirely created itself is irresponsible. Yes, caution & regulation seem very necessary, especially regarding disinformation but also many other domains.

Our species has been on the inevitable road to extinction for millennia and we long ago passed the point of no-return. Is this really the massively overpopulated dying world in a state of full-blown climate collapse that you want to bring another innocent child kicking and screaming into? Stress R Us

The best thing an AGI could do for humanity is to prevent us from killing each other, not by force, but by disrupting supply chains, communications, and financial transactions that enable the military machines throughout the world.

The director behind the documentaries "Aliens of the Deep", "Ghosts of the Abyss", and "Expedition: Bismarck" made a documentary about the horrors of AI called "The Terminator" -it was scary.

Oh no! If only there was some sort of way humans could have predicted this, through a fictional storytelling medium perhaps? A visual one would be especially effective at communicating how bad it could become...oh well, looks like there's nothing we could have done 🙄
