I liked this ending. He couldn't have chosen her. She was still operating as a 13 yo with fantastical ideas about love, loyalty, and how the world works. She still needed to grow up.

Looking back as an adult I respect this ending. Matty is a good guy, he has respect for himself for not taking Jenna back, he’s loyal to his wife and wants to fulfill the commitment he made to her. He and Jenna will always have that special bond as they were best friends and he liked her too, but he loves his fiancé now and will not throw that away, which is admirable. Jenna didn’t want to miss her chance with him later on.

Edit: on some level it is cheating I suppose, but he stopped it before letting it go any further, and I’m sure his wife would understand and be accepting about it if he tells her.

This scene is so beautiful and always makes me cry .. they were meant to be together from the time they were kids but she got sidetracked .. but they ended up together in the end .. just as it should have been.

The value of her going forward in time was to realize what she was about to lose going forward with her current values. He wouldn't choose her because she wasn't who he would want for a wife then, not with the values she had built her life based on. But she changes from the experience and then chooses what matters and let's go of the empty desires. Also Matt wasn't shallow, he obviously picked a woman he loved and so to dump her over an old crush would show a negative about him.
