Fuchsia Bonsai Trees - Pruning and Shaping Ideas 🌱

In this Bonsai video we are working on some Fuchsia Bonsai Trees. I'll be showing you some of my methods of approaching these through different pruning and shaping techniques via the clip and grow method. This will improve the overall taper and ramification of the trees over time.

Check out Andy's Channel: @Bonsaicrazy

The methods in which I prune/shape these trees are pretty straightforward so any beginner to Bonsai should be able to follow along! The Fuchsia is also a very easily accessible perennial found in most nurseries and garden centres!

I think Fuchsia are well-suited for Bonsai as they have naturally small leaves, elegant hanging flowers, and are fast growing! The Fuchsia's ability to thrive in containers and adapt to different pruning techniques allows you to create a variety of styles from informal to formal upright, cascade, or semi-cascade, all while showcasing the plant's graceful beauty. They are also quite hardy and will stay alive in a variety of conditions making them the perfect tree for beginners! (They are even considered an invasive species by some!)

Thank you so much for this video. I am so glad I found your channel. I have never seen a video of someone breaking down why they are cutting where they are cutting when pruning a bonsai. They just go to town on it and you are left shocked and wondering why so much was cut. This really helps me wrap my mind around the intentional pruning required with bonsai.

Hello Adam. I think you should know that there are more than 20.000 different fuchsia cultivars registered. So you get from really small flowers to big blousy ones . I think that you should choose a hanging fuchsia as a cascade bonsai, and not the Genii it looks like you have as a cascade type. Marinka is a good variety for this kind of style.
And as you say, they root very easy, and can become too many sometimes. I am currently training a WALZ Polka as a bonsai which is a very special looking flower that is purple and green with blue pollen.

Hi Adam!! I love trying to guess which branch you are removing next - sometimes I'm right on and sometimes not but you make all of this really fun. I have a fuchsia out in the yard and had no idea that I could form it. So I'm off to go find it and see what's there. Thanks for the education.

Great work Andy. Thanks for all your wise knowledge on Fushias.
Here in Melb Australia spring has just started and last week l dug out a 30-year-old Fushia from the garden with a 40mm trunk width.
Hoping for new growth shortly to see if the new bonsai project has taken off.
And yes, Fushia l found need a lot more water than the rest of the garden even with growing in part shade.
And vigorous growers even in our winter.
