Druids: My body is a temple to nature, I will never allow metal to caress this skin..

Also Druids: As long as this metal sword’s hilt is made out of wood & wrapped in leather it’s ok..

The real reason is that they know about existence of the spell “heat metal”. They’re not taking the risk.

Druid: *casts Heat metal and makes a knight melt inside his own armor

Druid: *Looks at self and sees that he is, in fact, wearing armor made out of metal as well

Druid: "the hell am i doing!?" *Removes metal armor

Ok so i am going to try to explain this from a legend standpoint. So in alot of earth/Celtic lore. The fey have weakness to metal and iron specifically. Druids got their powers from learning about the ballance of nature and the natural world from the farie folk. So in alot of stories refined metal (destruction of nature is required to make) will cut off their power and connection to the natural world. Weapons are allowed due to the evil fairie folk. It harms/destroys them. It also tends to have a smaller amount of metal than shields and armor thus not as much power is cut off from the natural world.

I like that as a lore explanation. Not dissimilar to Outward when a mage wear a heavy helmet it blocks their connection to magick.

Druid: "oh I can't use armor or shields made of metal? Ok I'll just use dragon scales." 🖐🎤

It goes back to the 1st Edition days in Basic D&D when the Druid was a sub class of Cleric available at level 9 to neutral Clerics and Bard was only available when you had the right mix of levels. The class was introduced in the Companion books (level 16-25) and was designed as a warden of the forest and plants ensuring no major damage was ever done to the trees and plants while rejecting civilization. As D&D is essentially in the iron/steel ages of technology, metal tools and weapons were the main methods of harming nature (e.g. cutting down a tree with an axe), and as the Druid has sworn to protect the forest they call home, plants, animals, and other natural forms of life, they refuse to have and use something that could harm said life. They also lose any ability to turn undead creatures once they become a Druid since they must stay Neutral.

I could actually see a way around this of sorts it would even make a good scenario for players to have to deal with:

A new type of metal is discovered that through a secret process, blacksmiths can create what is being called “druidic iron”
It’s heavy and lowers movement speed when used for armor, but it can be worn by druids without losing their abilities.

And weapons would have the same Faye harming properties as cold iron weapons.

Repost:
in 3.5 there is a material that heavy armor could be made out of called Iron Oak. It was an 'elvish' material that naturally occurred when a tree would eat a metal vein and incorporate it into its physiology. Heavy armor made from this material counted as natural armor and could be worn by druids.

One thing I will continue to harp on about 5E is that they sacrificed too much to make the game "more accessible". It's sad when the commen trend for the kickstarter books is adding something back in that was removed from 3.5. Too much was "left up to the players" imo, Over burdening newer dms

2nd edition says that it blocks their access to Magic plus they used to have to collect their own mistletoe as a holy symbol with a silver or gold sickle

I find it interesting that the 5e Discription says that druids don't wear armor made of metal not that they can't.

Played a Kenku Druid named Dok for a while, he refused to use anything metal at all, no metal weapons, no metal armor none of that. He was illiterate, and was very clueless to things like trade and other things found in civilization. A running joke I had was that whenever the party would receive mail he would be the first to grab it, only to remember he didn't know how to read. He's adorable and I love him.

I really like the followup shorts, you are very good at explaining the rules in a short manner.

So I don't know much about D&D stuff but I remember your video about werewolves hating vampires because vampires don't change and werewolves represent nature which is about change so my own little head Cannon is that since metal is very difficult to alter the state of versus cloth and leather that nature magic doesn't work well with it

I like the heat metal lore because if that spell existed, it would be one of the most powerful spells against other humanoids. Like how many knights are wearing or using metal. And it makes sense they’ll use metal weapons (because if they do get heated they can drop it quickly and not literally melt alive). It’s also maybe a form of punishment. They punish people who use the earth to protect themselves

I was always under the impression that while metal in its raw form or as ore was fine but when it's processed and refined then it becomes unnatural

In one of the expansion books it provided more info in it. This was in 3.5. It basically said that metal that is worked into its usable form, usually steel, is manufactured, and therefore no longer natural. Raw metal/iron isn't used and therefore its natural form isn't used. If raw iron was...it would likely be okay....but that would make shitty armor lol. Experienced 3.5 player here

It's specifically "Will not, " not "can not." IIRC in AD&D it was actually against their oaths to wear metal. Bards specifically get this restriction removed, so they can cast their druidic magic while wearing armor. My assumption is that the 4e-era cosmic retcon changed this.

i think it has something to do with wildshape?? like maybe the metal is harder to shift in or cloth can bend into the different animals shapes idk
