Adam Savage Installs a Collet Locker on His Lathe!

Here's another instance where one build begets another build. While working on the rack gears for his miniature vault build, Adam found himself in need of a better system to hold those parts in his lathe using a standard 5C collet. So instead of using his tried and true chuck, he disassembles part of his lathe to install a collet locker and closer to get the repeatability he'll need for this project.

I'm a maker in an entire different realm- specifically fly tying- but I am devouring his content. I watch it all- whether I have those tools or not because he articulates the process and the philosophy so well. I'm in the middle of a giant shop reorg and I'm building my own niche hardware store in my workshop and implementing first order of retrievability for tools.

I swear you became like my spirit animal (person) when you said "Am I getting too far in the weeds?" and then cut to a different scene. That is my daily life while working in IT and trying to explain a process to someone asking me how long a project will take...

"Is it an 11 degree angle?"

"Yep, that's an 11 degree angle."

As a power plant mechanic, kroil is an absolute beast. We use that by the gallon. Yes, the smell is pungent, but you should smell it when it's cooked over with a rosebud. (Oxy-acetylene)
There's a reason it's referred to as "a thousand tiny little hammers".

I love the smell of Kroil! Especially when it you hit it with fire.

I have been a mechanical engineer for 22 years, half my life. Learning my trade in a well known ship yard in England. I had to work manual and CNC. Personally I think CNC is more precise and with a wider range of production. However, manual lathes are much more satisfying to work on. They smell better too.

I appreciate having all the video in one piece. Having multiple parts can be somewhat dissatisfying. Always like to see reasonable conclusions!

Always a pleasure to watch. Kroil will eventually release anything given time and tapping with a hammer to help it kreep. I agree with the cut and shut on replacing parts than going all in on a full new leadscrew or shaft as a first attempt at least. Didn't work this time but works well with leadscrews that arn't spinning. keep what fits, replace the worn part. I think that remaining vibration will drive you to distraction.I have no suggestions on how to fix it. You will work it out.

it's a " Royal Products lever collet closer" and the thing you called a "bent shaft" is a "draw tube" ;) they are made to be used with a spindle taper adapter sleeve which allows the collet to be INSIDE the spindle nose, this reduces the stockout and minimizes the chance for runout from axial misalignment. using it with a scroll closer nose instead gives you the worst of both worlds, the poor alignment of a collet hanging way out there, with the setup time and complexity of a lever closer. the scroll closers were less used traditionally because of the high cost and (potentially) poor runout. the current availability of the cheap keyed closers combined with the easy setup makes them by far the most common choice for hobby machinists these days.

Ahhh Kroil, “the oil that creeps”. Has helped me loosen countless fittings at work and at home. Stinks to high heaven, but damn does it work.

@35:14 YES!!! That is exactly what I've been yelling at for the last couple of minutes! Hahaha! This is what a go kart rear axle looks like when you bend one and try to drive on it. It's not fun.

The Thumbnail alone is good enough for me. Can't wait to watch the actual video.🤓🙏

I made mine a thread to lock instead of lever. Because it now fits many lathes, and not stuck on one machine forever.

Adam, dig down into the weeds as far as you want. We are HERE for it lol

as a machinist, the only con of collet chucks is diameter stock limit. 5c collets only go to 1.0625 in.

Now that's a good yak shaving video

I was a manual machinist for 14 years before I had to teach myself to program and operate CNC machines, I had a few crashes lol but got pretty good at programming without any CAM software 24 years ago

For second operations on smaller bits i tend to use a er32 collet holder and a stop in it, and that is a on a cnc machine :) the er32 goes up to 20mm hole.

Kroil - we all have different preferences. For me, I *LOVE* the smell of Kroil.
