What’s the movie Legends of the Fall about?
In the early 1900s, Colonel Ludlow (Anthony Hopkins from Elephant Man and Meet Joe Black) and his three sons Alfred (Aidan Quinn from An Early Frost and Bury My Heart at Wounded Knee), Tristan (Brad Pitt from Meet Joe Black and The Devil’s Own) and Samuel (Henry Thomas from E.T.), moved to a ranch in Montana. Samuel falls in love with Susannah (Julia Ormond from Temple Grandin), a young woman who immediately conquers his two brothers’ hearts. They become engaged, but Samuel is abruptly killed on the front during World War I. Alfred declares himself to Susannah, but she rejects him. Tristan also plans to marry her, but, traumatized by the death of his brother, he can't get involved in this relationship and decides to go traveling. Susannah makes the decision to return to Alfred, who by then became a congressman - much to the discontent of his father - and they marry. When Tristan finally returns, he marries Isabelle 2, the daughter of a family who has always lived on the ranch, and has two children with her. She is killed by corrupt policemen, and Tristan avenges her by killing them. Susannah commits suicide because she’s still in love with Tristan. Tristan is chased by the sheriff and his men because of his revenge, and he ends up alone with his father to confront them. The old man miraculously manages to eliminate the three policemen, but the sheriff is about to shoot the Ludlows, when he is killed unexpectedly. It is Alfred. Saving his family, he manages to reconcile with them. Tristan runs away, leaving his children to Alfred, to prevent reprisals. In closing, we see him dying old, confronting a bear, in 1963.

There’s so few movies that depict Canadian soldiers in battle, I’ll always like this movie for being one of them.

It's quite thoughtful of them to blow a whistle to alert the enemy they are coming.

The White Gurkhas! Those Canadian troopers acquired quite the fearsome & hard fighting reputation as some of the toughest & fiercest soldiers of that war (most of whom had Scottish Highland & Irish blood flowing through them, as the ancient primal fierceness & indomitable courage of their Gaelic ancestors still pulsed within those WW1 Canadian Warriors powerfully, primevally & even mystically!)!

It’s sad that these young guys were literally killing each other over nothing.

British leadership in World War One was really miserable. I bet the generals and colonels who ordered the attack thought to themselves ‘they didn’t even take the first trench because of a lack of discipline.’ Leadership hadn’t caught up to the realities of modern warfare.

Hollywood tactics matched to Hollywood marksmanship.

You can't advance shoulder to shoulder against unsuppressed positions like they are showing and not take about 90% causalities. Even with combat stress people are not that bad a shot.

Movie wants its cake and eating. If you want to show the brutal realty of attempting to advance against unsuppressed enemy then show the brutal deaths that should have resulted from the scene you have set up.
