The definition of unrequited love! The way she borders between a once in a lifetime love, and sheer obsession is brilliant! Should have won an Oscar for this

It is one of the most sentimental scenes I have ever seen. Always cry. Julia and Brad were fantastic.

When they both started crying, those kisses that she gave Tristan were so gentle and passionate, they scream “come back to me, I beg you.” She loved him too much to the point that it became an unhealthy and dangerous obsession. 😢

This is why it’s so important to see the reality and recognize when to let go.

Her near obsession over Tristan always made me wonder if Samuel had survived, would she have been a faithful partner to him? I don’t think Tristan would have crossed that line but feel she would have. It always seemed to me that she was fond of Samuel, leaned on Alfred, but loved Tristan. Personally, I preferred his relationship with Isabel II. She had an inner strength and independence that Susannah never did, and Tristan needed those qualities in a partner.

Absolutely heartbreaking scene, the way it starts with her trying so hard not to break down but you can see in his eyes he knows what she is thinking and they just break down ugh, such subtle but beautiful acting. I adore this film!

If you watch the scene where she is introduced to the brothers, you can see the love that Alfred had for Susannah almost from moment one. Tristan however sets more of a lustful gaze upon her. He is too wild and carefree to think about love and settling down. Susannah falls deeply in love with Tristan but sadly, he doesn't feel the same for her. I think he tries to love her in his own way but he is in too deep a mourning over the loss of Samuel and I think he feels a sense of shame for having taken his brothers soon to be wife, even if he was dead. He was too messed up after the war and the timing was not on Susannah's side. Alfred would have been more her speed from the start but she only settled for him once it was clear Tristan wasn't coming back to her.
And then this scene...She had to be sure it was truly over by visiting him. I know it was over but I think she needed to see if there was any feelings he may still have lingering for her. When he says, "Go home...to Alfred." She knows there is absolutely no hope. Ugh, this movie is just so heart wrenching. Poor Susannah and poor Alfred. :(

She had to live with the fact that she couldn't be with him or have children. She said sometimes she dreamed she's the mother of his children I guess that will be her forever dream being that she took her own life because she couldn't be with the man that she really loved that was her life story .Oh Susannah 💕 ❤ 💗 we love your character in this film.
