In the late 19th and early 20th Century, a disturbing trend began to take hold, a number of African or southeast Asian people were displayed as one displays animals in zoos. These “Human Zoos” became increasingly popular.

I find it amazing that someone who named their channel disturban actually has one of the greatest outlooks on humanity one can have.

One often forgets how inhumane the turn to the 20th century really was.

Everything about this is horrific but the story of Ota Benga is especially devastating. He deserved so much better.

One human zoo you could have covered was the one in Japan during WW2. The pilots they captured were stripped down naked and made into a human zoo. One of the most monstrous acts that happened to the pows. Mark Felton has a video on the subject it was unreal of how the civilians were okay with this.

They were capturing natives, killing their families and keeping them in zoo's to gawk & laugh at and not once did they think "maybe were the savages". The hypocrisy levels are through the roof with those people.

History is horrifying, but we must learn history to prevent it from repeating again

Clicked on the video as soon as I saw the thumbnail. I'm not from Congo, but tooth sharpening was a common rite of passage for boys once they reached puberty. It was excruciating and painkillers didn't exist at the time, so those who were able to go through with it were considered "real men" and got all the attention from the ladies

Edit: so the Europeans were terrified of the sharpened teeth. It reinforced their images of Africans being ruthless, savage cannibals, wild and uncivilized. Also, the early settlers wanted to make the place look as friendly as possible so that more Europeans would be encourage to settle there, so they "encouraged" some early missionaries to speak against the practice, calling it heathen and grouping it with idol worship and ancestral veneration. A lot of early Christian converts had their teeth knocked out as a result. A few, like those who learnt enough English to become translators, had their teeth capped....it looked better to the Europeans than having a toothless smile. And that was how tooth filing and a lot of other customs slowly disappeared in our tribe.

As a black man that has always had a fondness for history, mostly that in relations to black people - this video, couldn’t have been explained any better, Disturban.

Human beings could be so cruel to each other, and though I am glad of the progress we’ve made, thus far, stories as this hurts. Especially knowing this isn’t too far in the past and still has its thread woven into society as it is today.

Much props to you, Disturban!

The story of Benga was so sad to hear it brought me to tears. He was treated so horribly and when I heard he took his own life I was even more sad. May he Rest In Peace.

It's devastating that Ota Benga was held at the Bronx Zoo. I live in NYC and I've gone there so many times with family and as a child and idk, the animals seem so miserable... I couldn't even imagine what it was like for a person there. He should have been home. Zoos in general aren't my favorite but this in particular it really makes me shudder..

“We think we are worthy of being considered human.” That line broke my heart, I wish I could tell everyone of them they are worthy just like everyone else. Our differences are what make human beings so beautiful but also what drives some of us to harm and treat others poorly. This breaks my heart but it is an important lesson to the future of humanity so that we will never repeat these inhumane acts to another human being ever again.

The history of racism is its own genre of horror. Chills me to the bone, and so depressing.

The entire world could be considered a human zoo at this point

I just love how you didn't put "The Disturbing History of"... before the title of this video. The name and idea is disturbing itself and should never be seen as anything otherwise.

To put it in perspective, human zoos were still around AFTER my grandmother was born (1950)
