How I Get A Trim That Doesn’t Suck and Isn’t Too Short

I remember being scared to go for trims because I was worried they’d cut it too short and ruin all the mehnat I’d done to grow the length of my hair! But over the years, I’ve figured out that trims are so important because they make the hair look healthier and more polished.

My introverted self has learnt to speak up and actually say out loud what I want and there have been times when I’ve actually sat in the salon chair giving a fake smile to the hairstylist at the end of the cut pretending it was perfectly all right, while I was crying on the inside 🥲

A tip I should have added besides these is to choose a stylist who you’re comfortable with and who ‘listens’ and isn’t just pointing out the flaws in your hair or asking you to get an X Y Z treatment. This is so important, especially because salons are mostly so busy and heavy on marketing, that rarely does anyone have the patience to listen to you so I always book appointments on less busy days and timings. I also make mental, or sometimes, even a written note so I’m clear on what I want out of the haircut or trim before I head to the salon. It really helps!

I feel a good haircut can REALLY add a lot to one’s face structure. It boils down about choosing the right one for yourself. I don’t know what the name of my hairstyle/haircut is but I usually keep the back length the same and ask for texturising or layers in the front/crown area for volume. I’ve had this style for a few years now and I find this easy to maintain too.

Let me know if you’ve had any horror stories at the hair salon in the comments? I can’t be the only one haha.

Yes, even I do the same. I had seen in Japan they do dry hair-cut always.

I really like you a lot. You seem like a very good and kind and considerate person. You look like someone who is very empathetic and even if people treat you wrong or be rude to you, you never treat them wrong.

Recently this tragedy happened with me too. My hair were hip level and I asked her to give a trim of about 2-3 inches with long layers but she was a scissor loving hairdresser and to my dismay drastically reduced the length by 12 inches. It has been a nightmare as my efforts of so many years were in vain within minutes. I am so disappointed how short it is now. I have decided to trim my hair by myself in future.

My mother trims my hair at home after every 3-4 months 😅

A good hairstylist would always know that wavy curly hair will jump and also trim is not cutting of 2 to 3 inches

“Trims” and “haircuts” are the same thing — it’s, simply, a matter of length and style.

“A trim” is a descriptive reference, for the type of haircut/length desired.

As we learn in freshman beauty college — “A haircut is a haircut is a haircut.”

That’s why “trims” and “haircuts” cost the same — because they are the same.

I know it may seem like semantics, to state such, though, as a hairstylist, I feel it’s important to note; as I have had people come in an expect “a trim” to have a different/lower cost, because they believe it doesn’t take the same time and effort as most any other haircut would.

Now, a bang trim is a different story..
