The way I remember sinus, cosinus and tangent (in German): G-A-GA.

* G-egenkathete/Hypotenuse
* A-nkathete/Hypotenuse
* G-egenkathete/A-nkathete


In English it would be O-A-OA:


* o-ppsite/hypotenuse
* a-djacent/hypotenuse
* o-ppsite/a-djacent

My initial thoughts for the inverse function would be to express x in terms of y e.g. x=3y+2 i.e. f(y) but I can understand why the form f(x) was maintained.
