To be fair to German, it's phonetically a very consistent language. Yes, you have to learn the pronounciations of letter combinations and how a letter is pronounced at the start/end of a word, but once you have done that, it's pretty much always the same.
You can always derive the pronounciation of a word just from the latters, if you apply the rules correctly. It's not like "university" and "unintended" in english, were the uni- spelling is the same, but it's pronounced completely different and you have to know the words to get it right.
