It’s so bizarre to me that Germany has words for almost everything, but they chose to use 1 word for you, she and they 😅

don't forget the Anstandsstück (decency piece). it's the last piece of food on a plate at a party for example. everybody wants to eat it but nobody wants to be rude and offend anyone by taking it and leaving an empty plate behind, so it just sits there and everybody is resisting to take it out of politeness.

Fun fact: “Sie” (formal “you”) and “sie” (they) are actually the same word.

In german, the only real way to refer to someone is the common “Du” (You) .

But in the Middle Ages the nobles wanted everyone to refer to them as if they would be more worth then normal people.

So they began speak of themselves as “wir” (we). In singular.

“We want to ride out, make the horses ready”

So their staff began to talk about them as “sie” (they), wich is the correct way in German to talk about a group of people.

And it never died out. 😄

Fun fact: English used to have formal and informal versions of "you". "Thou" was informal and "you" was formal, but England decided that people should be formal all the time, always, so everyone only ever used "you" and "thou" was dropped from the language.

I mean english is the one to talk with you for both singular and plural. Usually the verb shows if sie means she or they and the reason the formal version of singular you is so polite is because it addresses a single person as several, thus it has to be the same
