Why the Death Eaters SERVE Voldemort - Harry Potter Explained

Hey everyone,

Welcome to another installment of Harry Potter Theory. In this video, we’re going to be discussing Lord Voldemort & the Death Eaters. Now, we know the Death Eaters as Lord Voldemort's loyal followers, they bear the dark mark, and when the curse Morsmordre is cast the dark mark symbol is projected in to the sky, a symbol that incites fear in the heart of many.

From the Goblet of Fire:

“He realised that it was a colossal skull, composed of what looked like emerald stars, with a serpent protruding from its mouth like a tongue. As they watched, it rose higher and higher, blazing in a haze of greenish smoke, etched against the black sky like a new constellation."

Arthur Weasley expresses his fear of the symbol in the goblet of fire:

"...You-Know-Who and his followers sent the Dark Mark into the air whenever they killed. The terror it inspired... you have no idea, you’re too young. Just picture coming home and finding the Dark Mark hovering over your house, and knowing what you’re about to find inside... Everyone’s worst fear... the very worst."

Now, we know that when Voldemort was just a boy at school, he was in Slytherin house, and it was here that he formed a gang of fellow slytherin students.

Dumbledore described Riddles gang as “a mixture of the weak seeking protection, the ambitious seeking glory, and the thuggish seeking a leader who could show them more refined cruelty”. It was these same students that are considered to be the forerunners to what-would-become the Death Eaters that we see later on in the books and films. Death Eaters are pure-blood radical supremacists, that cast unforgivable curses without remorse, and torture muggles,half-bloods, and blood-traitors alike. One thing that I always found interesting was that the Death Eaters were pure-bloods, seemingly hellbent on achieving pure blood supremacy - but right at the top of their organization there was a half blood, Lord Voldemort. The Death Eaters always seem so proud of their pure magical bloodlines, so isn’t it ironic that their leader, the dark lord himself, was a filthy half blood?

If the Death eaters are so intent on pure-blood supremacy and ridding the world or dominating over half-bloods / muggles, isn’t it unusual that the very man that they follow IS a half-blood? What’s their angle? Why do they follow him?

I think you've missed a few things, the appeal of might - "magic is might", powerful magic is more important than muggle blood hence the importance of Snape as a Death Eater. Also Voldemort is he last heir of Slytherin and this makes Voldermort magical (particularly Slytherin) royalty

I don't think Voldemort actually believed in a pureblood supremacy, simply for one reason: his plans don't benefit the interests of the purebloods, at all. Like instead of burning buildings and torturing people, scheming and breeding seem to be a lot more effective, than open terror. I think Voldermort simply made up the cause in order to appeal to those he wanted to gain the favors of, and could just as easily tone it down in order to recruit half-bloods or even muggleborns.
I think most of them have a more personal and less ideological reason for joining him. After all, Voldemort is someone who is deeply manipulative. For exemple, we know that Barty Crouch Jr had daddy issues and that the Black family isn't the best family to form a mentally healthy adult.
So I think it is more Voldemort gaining the obedience of people who are useful to him.

Barty Crouch Jr. is kind of a bad example of those who are on the "naturally evil" side, since he had a rough childhood with his father not being around, and saw Voldemort as a "true father figure who looked out for him."

Short answer- because they're his followers. Sometimes they get threatened or under the imperius curse but thats unlikely.

Voldemort promised to provide the pure bloods with something they wanted and he told them what they wanted to hear. At this point however half blooded witches and wizards were at least nominally accepted by them out of necessity since the majority of the wizarding world was half blooded at the time and not full blooded.

He probably acts as if he’s the one half blood who sees that pure bloods should dominate the world, and that it doesn’t matter that he’s a half blood, because he wants, one day, for there to only be pure bloods. Like a converse mentality. I imagine not many would question him anyway lol.

JK explained that halfbloods are different than muggle born witches and wizards, and a witches and/or wizards bloodline can purify once again.

A half blood can mate with a pureblood and spawn another half blood witch or wizard because one of their parents is still a half blood, but once that half blood spawn has their own child with *ANOTHER* pureblood witch or wizard, then that child will be recognized as a pureblood witch and/or wizard. This is because by the time they have their own child, their blood has been entangled by only pureblood witches and wizards so their blood is purified by the third generation.

An example would be harry and his parents, children and grandchildren.

Lily Potter is a muggle born witch who married James Potter, who was a pureblood wizard. Meaning their spawn, in Harry, would still be deemed as a half blood. Harry Potter, who is still deemed a half blood, married Ginny Weasley, who is a pureblood witch. Their children would then still be deemed as halfblood witches and wizards, as Harry is still a halfblood first generation.

Now if Harry's children married another pureblood witch and/or wizard, that spawn would be finally recognized as a pureblood witch and/or wizard, as it takes the third generation of a bloodline in order for the blood to be considered "pureblood."

If Harry's children married a halfblood witch and/or wizard, then their children would be recognized as "halfblood." So that child would have to start all over again if they would want to purify their blood line once again, until the third generation.

So in the world of Harry Potter, pureblood witches and wizards can look down on halfbloods, but they can choose to deem them worthy of being a witch and/or wizard. It's an ugly way of thinking and highly prejudiced, but in the case of Voldemort, he denounced his muggle born side of his bloodline and highly valued his pureblood side, which was his mother's side.

So basically, muggle born witches and wizards are what the Death Eaters and what some pureblood witches and wizards despise. But they are ok with half bloods, as they can fully purify their bloodline if they choose too. This is why when Voldemort took control of the Minstry of Magic and were examining everyone's blood status, only muggleborn witches and/or wizards were punished. Halfblood witches and wizards were free to remain in society, but muggle born witches and wizards were their main aim. Even Snape was a high ranking member of the Death Eaters, as he was a half blood.
