I believe this Electrolux 170 was manufactured in 1977, the year of the Queen's Silver Jubilee and perhaps Liz was gifted one to keep on top of the Corgi hairs on her priceless carpets. We will never know, but what I do know is this compact machine packs a punch.

In this video I give the machine a quick clean up, oil the brush roll bearings and fit a new belt and bag before filming a short demonstration of the cleaner in action. Nothing sucks like an Electrolux.

These were the Dyson's of the 70's. This sort of cleaner and the Hoover uprights of the time did a great beating action to lift driven in dirt in carpets. And often 70's carpets were heavy thick shag style carpets. Nothing like you see these days. From memory in Australia Eletrolux products where the top tier items. Stuff that lasted 20 years plus of service. Unlike all the Chinese rubbish of today.

Yes Roger you are correct, it was made in 1977, week 11. They appeared in the Autumn Winter 1977 Argos catalogue, priced £48.50 and the hose + tools set were an additional £7.95 if you wanted them as well. For comparison, in the same catalogue the E502 would have cost £55.95 with the tools at £10.95

Love the growl of this old timer. For 280 watts, really cleans and doesn't bog down on your infamous carpet.

I remember us having this very model back in the late 70s. It was bought at the electricity board shop. I seem to recall it eventually fell in two ... Great nostalgia!!

Very nice Z170, Roger! According to a VL post it was produced from 1970- c.1980. Btw, you were correct in determining the production of yours as 1977 (in the 11th week). The colors are saffron and lt. grey.

This is the one vintage cleaner that I own, mostly because it's the cleaner we had at home when I was a kid in the 70s-early 80s. so when one came up on Ebay from a house clearance, I snapped it up! It cleaned up very well and has a good motor. The amber neon probably still works, but the lens gets full of dust quite quickly which blocks the light, bit of a design flaw. I've manage to run some clear silicone sealer around the inside of mine that keeps the dust out and it shining brightly.
