People who are confused about Atheism in Hinduism need to observe the video carefully. The orator says that Hinduism does not ask for devotion as compulsion. So it allows you to be an atheist and judges you on the basis of Karma. Beside that, go through Nasadiya Sukta in Rig Vedas, which promotes the idea of Atheism.

Atheist is usually defined as not believing in God. Now of course ‘God’ needs to be defined. In the west (Christianity and Islam) God stands for a personal God who is separate from human beings and in one case has a son whom he sent to earth and in the other a last prophet. Now in India, this God is not considered the Ultimate. In India, the Ultimate, Brahman, Paramatman, Tat, whatever you call it, is all pervading, not personal. It is the life, energy, awareness, essence of everything manifested. It is what is unchanging in midst of this changing universe. Science discovered the one energy underlying every appearance. India’s wisdom discovered that this energy is conscious.

Now, this Brahman is not imaginable, it cannot be grasped by the mind, but since it is our essence, it can be felt, realized as real. To be able to realise it, the scriptures give some methods, like jnana or bhakti. Here comes in the personal God. To feel love (bhakti) for That, which is form- and nameless, it is helpful to direct it towards a form and name, which acts like an access point, i.e. Shiva, Devi, Krishna, Ram, Ganesh, etc…

In Hinduism you need not have an Ishta deva. You can do Jnana Yoga (trying to get to the one truth by enquiry) and many more paths are there. You are basically a Hindu when you acknowledge that there is a conscious basis or cause to that universe including your own person, that is immanent and even beyond and it would make sense of course to try to connect to that, more so, since the Rishis claim it is possible…

Unfortunately, in the west the Hindu concepts are not known. So when people lose faith in Christianity, they reject also ‘God’, not knowing that the personal God is not the real, ultimate truth.

Beautiful explanation of polytheism and why its way more benefical to human society than monotheism. Coming from a roman catholic background and now worshipping the old greeco-roman pantheon it feels like an liberation to the soul. May you my hindu brothers and sisters be blessed. May Jupiter Optimus Maximus, Vesta dea candida and Minerva dea sapientia watch over you and keep you safe.

Polytheism makes the most sense to me that’s why I follow the Celtic Irish pantheon a lot of our gods are similar yet different.

Amazing video. Trying to simplify Hinduism, is a heavy task in itself..! Kudos!

One special request.. Can you make a video on how Atheists/Agnostics form a part of this (like you mentioned in this video). Its very tedious to explain the concept of Hindu Atheists to people from monotheistic religions.. I can refer them to the video to make things simple :)

Superb!!! Our brothers and sisters from India are awesome! I am from Europe, and that makes me Indo-European, I feel very close to Indian people because we used to share so much in common. Before Christianity we used to believe in many gods, and I think it's a big loss for us. We now see our ancient religions as "myths" and "superstitions" like it's cool and yet ridiculous. But as this cool gentleman that made the videos, we simply focus on the wrong usage. The point is not to be "right" or "true", this concept cannot be understood by humans, but what we need so that all of us find a divine reflection of who we are. Well done I really like the video!! :) Have a great day!!

I'm an atheist by western and Christian/Muslim standards, but when I read about Hinduism, the overall Hindu concepts of all living beings as manifestations/parts of a pervading conscious nature of the cosmos matches up quite closely with my own views in many ways.

I'm still trying to figure out how to conceptualize the nature of sentience and how unified a possible underlying consciousness might be (as opposed to consciousness being something that only occurs in in bits at a time and there is no ultimate single mind). But still, Hinduism (and Buddhism as well) both have very strong similarities to my own way of thinking.

So I wonder if some Hindus would consider me to not be an atheist since their notion of God is different from the west.

Here I am giving the a bit summary of Vedanta to remove confusion regarding pluralism of God-
Ultimate Brahma is only reality, it is without form, without any material quality (like Hegel and Spinoza's god in western world) etc. Each body has holy spirit which is pure a and similar to Brahma. Soul is itself Brahma but when spirit associated with body(form with material world), as a material quality, spirit forgot the real nature of its purity and start take participation in this material world. It causes for the sad, happiness, frustration etc.. So this cause for the bondage of how we can find the liberation.??? Spirit + Soul is a finite one who is willing to find infinite one (Brahma) while spirit is itself a infinite. So here comes the role of different god. Vedant and Bhagvad Gita propounded that there are many path which are different path to reach one destination. So people make their own ideal god according to their own comfort way (like-Lord Rama for idealistic person, Lord Krishna for realistic persons, Durga Goddess to remark victory of good over bad etc etc ..) who had done remarkable work based on their some principles based on like- truth, honesty, welfare and serving people etc)which become an ideal way to find the liberation. Their path principles become the bench mark and people like to follow their path to find the liberation.
But again How a spirit can realize the true nature of its purity i.e. Brahma. Actually these refined pure commandments and principles help and cause for the removal of ignorance (material qualities) for true nature of its spirit and when these principles follow then it starts realising its true nature and ultimately it realises its own real nature ie. Brahma himself.

Although the word "Polytheism" is not right for describing Hinduism. Pluralism (not many Gods, many ways to the same God) is a more accurate term. However I liked the content of the video..! It delivers the message.
