Hi Laura! I’m so happy to see you planting toad lily in your garden. I live in zone 6A in Connecticut and it’s one of my favorite plants in my garden because it blooms in October for me in shade and the blooms last for a good bit. Prior to blooming they are a wonderful foliage plant. I do nothing to this plant except cut back the dead foliage in late fall or early spring. I don’t even fertilize it. You asked about it spreading - in my garden it’s very manageable. It spreads very slowly - maybe a foot or two in eight years. It’s also very easy to dig up. I have a lot of shady areas in my garden so I tried transplanting and it took very well. I have nothing bad to say about this plant!
