I'm in Zone 4 here in Minnesota, and have 3 large old oaks that are a challenge to garden under because under them it is actually part sun but quite dry because the canopy is so high abd very thick. Lungwort, lamium, ajuga, creeping Jenny, jacob's ladder, allium, geranium, mum, astilbe, bee balm, annabelle hydrangea, bush honeysuckle nightglow, liatris, moonbeam coreopsis, balloon flower, cardinal flower and coneflower I have had success with. Hostas and huechera however struggle if they are too close to the trunk or if near a large root, but those at least five away do just fine and if given extra water.

Lungwort is my favorite plant for shade, epimedium, Barrenwort is rare as hen's teeth where I live.

As for hostas, they are beautiful, but I lost the battle with slugs over the hostas, unfortunately. Thanks for this video.
