========= Wehrmacht LYRICS ==========

Pulled into war to serve a vision that’s supposed to last a thousand years
Part of a machine unstoppable, as merciless as tidal waves

Were they the victims of the time, or proud parts of larger goals?
Propaganda of the Reich, masterful machine

Time and again the battle rages on beyond the gates of misery
As casualties rise and millions die around them did they see it all?

Crazy madmen on a leash, or young men who lost their way?
Grand illusions of the Reich may seem real at times

Panzers on a line form the Wehrmacht’s spine
Lethal grand design
What about the men executing orders?

Ad victoriam
Ex machina
Non sibi sed patriae

Pulled into war to serve a vision that just didn’t last a thousand years
Part of a machine, though stoppable, as merciless as tidal waves

========= Historic Fact ==========

Openly ignoring the restrictions of the Treaty of Versailles, in 1935, Hitler formed the new German Wehrmacht, which was made up of the army, the Kriegsmarine and the newly established Luftwaffe. From a force of 100,000 men in 1933, the army increased to 2.6 million in 1936.

For those wondering the Latin words mean "Victory of the Machine, Not for Himself but for his Country."

What I find so compelling about this song is that the chorus so vividly paints the message of the entire song. As the booming voices of propaganda shout at us the image that the high command wanted us to see “Panzers on a line, form the Wehrmacht’s spine” it drowns out the singer who says “what about the men executing orders?”. It’s like the singer asks “what of the men?” And the shouting voice of propaganda is to say “don’t think of the men. Think of the machine. Think of the mighty panzer. Think of the image. Think of the vision. Think of the goal. The men are only parts of that.” And yet the singer still proclaims: “what about the men?”.

This song is one of your best. As I interpret it, it's a pretty strong warning. Anyone can become a pawn of evil if we're not careful with our trust and belief. Rock on, gentlemen!

The part where you sing "Panzers on a line", makes me (as a German guy) feeling impressed dy the brute force you are creating with this song

Probably one of my favorite Sabaton songs, so underrated too

This song is one of the best of Sabaton’s, partly because of the beautiful symbolism in the lyrics, debating on if the German soldiers were doing it because they could or if they were misled. Amazing song!

"Crazy madmen on a leash? Or young men who lost their way?"
One of my favourite sabaton lyrics.
Especially during lockdown in 2020!

“What about the men?”
Instead of it being answered it is DROWNED by the shouts of the machine. Accountability of the soldier is tossed aside, further cementing the excuse that they were just following orders.

Brilliant songwriting, Sabaton! Bravo!

it only took 12 years for the offical lyrics to be released.

as they say, better late than never.

I love how Sabaton demonstrates the nuances of warfare. While the chaos of war begs for simplicity like "good men vs evil men", this song does a great job of portraying how its never so simple.

The latin sentence is grammatically correct and actually means something. It's something like "For victory from a machine, not for himself but for the nation"

As much as none of us want to admit it, everyone is capable of great evil and great good.

One of your best, truly a powerful song, your music dose not just teach history it teaches us not to let history be forgotten, and to learn to never repeat history,
