How To Construct A Scatter Plot Graph - What Is A Scatter Plot Graph

Показать описание
In this video we cover what is a scatter plot and how to construct a scatter plot using a set of ordered pairs of data.
Transcript/notes
A scatter plot is a graph of ordered pairs, x and y. For instance this table shows the number of passing yards each game for a quarterback in column 1, and the number of points his team scored in each of those games in column 2. So, pass attempts is the x variable, and points scored is the y variable and these are ordered pairs of x and y. And we can create a scatter plot for this data.
Start by drawing an x and y axis, label the x axis as passing yards, and the y axis as points scored. Next, from the table, find the highest value in the table for x, which is 478, we can round up to 500 and mark that somewhere near the end of the x axis. Then make 4 more marks of equal distances going down the x axis marking them 400, 300 and on down to 100.
Next, from the table, find the highest value in the table for y, points scored, which is 51, we can round up to 60 and mark that somewhere near the top of the y axis. Then make 5 more marks of equal distances going down the y axis marking them 50, 40, and on down to 10.
Next we are going to plot the points on the graph. So, from the first row in the table we have 256 as our x axis value and 38 as the y axis value. Find that point of intersection on the graph and put a dot there. Next is 326 for x and 42 for y, and we put a dot at that point of intersection. And we would continue this process for all 16 of the ordered pairs in the table, as I have done here.
When looking at a scatter plot, one thing to take note of is the overall relationship between the dots. As you can have a positive linear relationship, a negative linear relationship, a curved relationship or even no apparent relationship.
