Ancient sites of Mainland Greece
Показать описание
Greece is of course, the birthplace of democracy, Western philosophy, Western literature, historiography - and is therefore justly considered to the be the cradle of Western Civilisation. From the 8th century BC the Greeks were organised in a system of city states and a visit to Greece requires some understanding of how these were connected.
I have limited my talk to the mainland - the Peloponnese and the area around Athens and Delphi and have deliberately excluded Macedonia - the area around Thessaloniki and the islands - Crete for instance - as We just don’t have the time in a single lecture to cover all these sites.
I am not a trained archaeologist, I’m not a historian and I’m not even a tour guide in Greece - so I come at all this material very much as a tourist and I see this very much with the eyes of the first time visitor to Greece, but I hope you will enjoy it.
