The teres major is a thick, rounded muscle of the shoulder joint. It extends from the inferior part of the scapula to the humerus (crest of the lesser tubercle). It lies in close proximity to its smaller brother, the teres minor, but is not considered one of the rotator cuff muscles, as it doesn't attach to the capsule of the glenohumeral joint.

It has a close relationship with the latissimus dorsi muscle, as it runs parallel and inserts together at the crest of the lesser tubercle of the humerus. Sometimes the muscle fibers of these two muscles even blend together and explain the similar functions: The teres major is involved in internal shoulder rotation, adduction and retroversion of the arm.

In this video tutorial we will go over the attachments, nerve supply and actions of the teres major muscle:

- 0:12 introduction
- 0:27 teres major origin and insertion
- 1:11 innervation (lower scapular nerve, thoracodorsal nerve)
- 1:26 functions of the teres major

This video just makes it a lot more complicated than it actually is!!!

Could you include an animation of the arm in action? That would make it easier to visualize the action.

Just a note : The origin of the muscle is actually on the "lateral" border and not the "medial" border

this is great if i want someone reading off medical text without really telling me in plain language about the subject matter

Insertion is not on lesser tubercle it is on medial lip of bicepital groove

I think u have a mistake, in my book it is wriiten that it originates from the lower part of the lateral border of scapula?!

The origin of teres major is wrong in this video. It originates from the dorsal part of lateral border in the lower part. I think they video creator got confused with the insertion of rhonboideus major.

I'm pretty sure the origin is the lateral border of the scapula and not the medial border

Does the Teres major muscle belong to any particular muscle group, in the similar fashion as the Teres minor belongs to the Rotator cuff muscle group?

I am very interested in these muscles because of my shoulder infringement period but I also had a hard time following technical terms Period maybe with more pictures? Or more layman's terms question mark thank you

Looks wrong, wrong, wrong to me. You've got it originating from just below the spine of the scapula-Probably a good idea to take it down

Teres major
• Action: – Medially rotates and adducts arm
INNERVATION:
- posterior surface of scapula
- inferior angle intertubercular groove of humerus,
- tendon fused with tendon of latissimus dorsi Lower scapular nerve
• Origin: – Inferior angle and lateral border of scapula
• Insertion: – Crest of lesser tubercle of the humerus

You have the insertion wrong. Should be medial lip of intertubercular groove, posterior to latissimus
