The Multiple Listing Service (MLS) can be a very confusing system for any new Real Estate Agent, as there is not one central database for property listings. I give a simple breakdown of the SF Bay Area's 4 MLS's and their respective regions.

MLS's are also combining to include several local board MLS's, into one, to provide greater efficiency for Realtors and their clients. You got California Regional MLS (CRMLS) (statewide) and Metro Liat for Northern California, which consists of several systems you described. San Francisco MLS and Marin County can still be separate so you still have to rely on how you/he describes it. But, please keep in mind that CRMLS is expanding to encompass more places throughout California.
