Gallium + Aluminum Foil produces Hydrogen in Water

preview_player
Показать описание
In this short clip, we add cold distilled water to an aluminum-gallium alloy, which instantly produces hydrogen gas.

When we publish the full video, you'll see where we melt the gallium in a beaker and combine it with aluminum foil to produce an alloy of aluminum and gallium. This video starts right after we create the alloy.

The gallium in this reaction is not changed and can be recovered. The aluminum is converted to aluminum hydroxide.

The gallium disables the aluminum oxide micro-coating that normally prevents aluminum foil from reacting with water. This video shows the true reactivity of aluminum metal.

You can use Aluminum Galinstan amalgam to produce hydrogen. Galinstan is an alloy of Gallium, Indium, and Tin. You mix Gallium, Indium, and Tin in a beaker and heat it on a hotplate. The Aluminum Galinstan amalgam can be used for reductive amination of 2-thienylacetone with freebase methylamine in ethanol distilled water solution to produce Methiopropamine (MPA).

We used to fill balloons with hydrogen as kids. Lye, water and aluminum foil shredded in a Coke bottle with a balloon stretched over the top. Tie off the balloon and watch it rise up into the sky our of sight.

Check out my Aluminum Galinstan making Hydrogen videos. I heated a crucible and mixed in Aluminum foil and Galinstan and made an amalgam. Then I made Hydrogen in water and in ethanol water. The trick is to heat up the Galinstan, add in Aluminum foil pieces, mix it while dry with a stick looking pencil or back of a spoon, and then add it to hot Hydrogen oxide (H2O, Water) to form Hydrogen gas (H2). You can weigh the Galinstan and also the Aluminum to figure out the ratio of Galinstan to Aluminum and percentage and calculate stuff. I want to make Isopropylamine freebase and then Isopropylamine HCl in the future with Acetone and excess ammonia.

I heard that this could be used to generate hydrogen for power production, only questions I have are:

This method is stated to "not need energy" to make hydrogen, which is true, but what about the alloy? Don't you need to spend energy to make the alloy? Where does it come from?(Does it occur naturally?)

What do you do with the waste Aluminum Oxide? Like on a large industrial scale.

I understand gallium will destroy or corrode both aluminum and steel.
I have seen an example of an aluminum seat post being removed from a steel bike frame with application of gallium.
My concern is the steel frame. Does gallium take much longer to corrode the steel than the aluminum?
If the process was performed carefully with small applications to the aluminum and quick clean up afterwards would the steel be safe?
What would be the best method to neutralize any gallium that got away from me inside the frame?

So the gallium is recoverable, what about the aluminum? I am assuming the aluminum is not recoverable? Using this method of Hydrogen production, how much would it cost to produce a 1 KG of hydrogen approximately? Is it feasible to do this on a large scale?

Nice one yes next thing I typed in after revising LiAlH4 and NaBH3 is how strange is gallium and hydrogen with Al or B

This is exactly the principle for production of solid state hydrogen

Gallium + aluminum+ water produce hydrogen

Could you venture a guess as to how much hydrogen might have been produced in the reaction (grams)?

gallium broke down aluminum into its nano sized, nano alumimum however can produces hydrogen directly only by water no needed gallium, some said high voltage treatment will reduce nano al oxide into nano al metal

Is that a hot plate you're doing this reaction on? What's the temperature? I want to try reproducing this experiment with my kids. :)
