What advantage would this bring as compared to doing this in the visualisation view ? You can drag and drop columns over each other in the 'Fields' panel and it has the same effect with all the functionality you mentioned here (renaming, reordering).

This is a step backward IMHO. Don't make me go to two places to complete the hierarchy (you know, efficiency).
