The second a company starts calling you family, you know the layoffs are coming next

Family doesn't equal Workplace. If your workplace says it's a Get out.

"unlimited PTO permanently!"
"Can I get that in writing?"

Yeah right!!! I worked for a company that had unlimited vacation. It was a scam. I was never allowed to use it. It was just to get the vacation time off the books as a liability because they have to pay your PTO when you leave or get laid off. Goobers.

That went from Personal Time Off to PERMANENT Time Off.

Family doesn't exist in workplace. It's all business.

“Unlimited PTO permanently” would mean being paid forever after termination. A layoff would be closer to unlimited unpaid time off (barring any severance packages).

From someone with close to 20 yrs in HR, unlimited PTO is not good for employees. Hear me out: most states require that accrued but unused PTO/vacation time be paid out when you either leave or terminate without cause. If it’s unlimited, you never really accrue anything. So you get nothing when you leave. Unlimited PTO is good for the org, not the employee.

And the main reason to switch to unlimited PTO is to have a loophole around California’s labor laws that require compensation for all employees in the state of California to have an exit check with all hours of unused PTO. If it’s “unlimited” the employer doesn’t have to pay anything.

When your job says one big family. Remember someone is the redheaded stepchild and it's probably you

You have to put in for PTO and that gets tracked so they know who's taking all the time off and typically the reason

Not only will you take less time off statistically, but they also don't have to pay you anymore for time off you would've accrued otherwise. They get more work out of you and also save money if they do layoffs.

That’s why my company switched from unlimited PTO to minimum PTO. If you aren’t in track to take at least three weeks off a year they will bug you about it. And they prefer you take more time.

I had a similar experience back in 1999 with Microsoft. I was working for a temp company, and there was a bonus in place if you made it to 6 months. My attendance was perfect, I had no write-ups, but anybody who is reaching that 6-month mark guess what happened...we were let go. It truly was not a fair practice.

The biggest concern was having to request PTO again and the different feeling than when you were using aquired time off.

TBH, it didn't change anything for most. People still take 3-6 weeks off a year. They also paid out all the aqured leave, so it was like a small bonus.

Honestly if you have Microsoft on your resume at all you're probably going to be fine. Who I's worried about are people already looking for jobs or got fired from non-famous companies who suddenly have to compete with people formerly from Microsoft.

When companies start treating like family, unfortunately they can cut them off like family, too.

Joshua said it best. Company is not your family, they only care about themselves
