Going to the movies, the best way to spend time with your family without actually spending time with your family.

Fun Fact, Christmas is usually the busiest day of the year for movie theaters cause they are the only place open and people literally don't care what they watch. It's also why movie theater employees hate working at a movie theater

Sam, I can't believe you left out the greatest February release of all time.
The LEGO Movie, released February 7, 2014.

back when we all used DVDs, a summer release meant that the movie would've left theaters in September or October, and could be released to home video just in time for the holidays, the largest retail season.

I would never have expected HIA to use the word "Twink" in a video but here we go

So they take advantage of it

I worked as a movie theater usher for a year and a half (Christmas 2013-Spring 2015) and remember think how some of those January/February movies got greenlit. There were two forgettable movies about Hercules that came out January 2014. But I did see a couple of decent indies coming out then as well. And senior citizens are always a reliable customer base.

You could make the argument that by releasing Black Panther and Shang-Chi in off months, they're not so much "innovating in the release schedule" as they are hedging their bets for movies with "riskier" minority casts.

Marvel makes so many movies, that they have to release some of them in February. And Marvel is like Apple: No matter what product, the people are still going to buy it, no matter when.

Sam from HAI and the word "twink" are so opposite to each other that to hear them even vaguely connected caused me actual physical damage

Don’t be silly Sam, we can’t see the dislike count.

Fans of Red Letter Media remember this phenomenon as "Fuck you it's January!"

I love your personality that comes out more in HAI, as opposed to Wendover. Love them both, it feels like yin and yang 😂

I would watch Lego Titanic 3: Into the Shang-Chi-Verse 3D & Knuckles in a heartbeat.

Australia has similar times when the studios wont movies (or more often certain kinds of movies). A perfect example is that no studio will ever release a movie that is in some way targeted at kids in Australia in February (no matter what the release date is for the rest of the world) because that's when our big summer holidays have just ended and everyone is busy with back-to-school stuff.

Warner Bros did this with The LEGO Movie where they delayed the Australian release long after the worldwide release and many people were annoyed at that (and no doubt people pirated the film). With the sequel though they got smarter and allowed cinemas to run preview screenings around the time of the worldwide release (so those who wanted to see it and had the time etc could do so) but delayed the general wide release until later when more kids would be in a position to go see it.

Thankfully Australia (kids movies or a few other rare cases aside) seems to get movies fairly close to the worldwide release date these days although Covid has disrupted that (with a large chunk of cinemas in the country shut due to lockdowns, a number of films got pushed back including Bond, Venom, Dune and Ghostbusters)

I think there might have been another factor in play when putting Black Panther out in February....

It's incredible how for a large extent this is just a Hollywood phenomenon. French films have a whole different schedule.
