Season 1, Episode 11 of The Space and Science Show #AskAbby series

What are the current challenges of getting humans to Mars?

What would you bring on a trip to Mars? Mac ‘n’ Cheese? An adult coloring book? How about a ukulele? #AskAbby director Emily doesn’t seem to quite understand what we need to go to Mars...but luckily Abby does! There are quite a few things to consider before we are ready for a human mission to Mars. This week, join The Mars Generation’s founder, Astronaut Abby, as she gives an overview of our current status on the journey to Mars.

Includes answers to questions including: How long would a human mission to Mars take? What challenges would astronauts face? How would they get food and other materials? What are some psychological and physical challenges for Mars-bound astronauts? What is NASA doing to help solve these challenges? In terms of technology, how ready are we to send a spacecraft to Mars? How will it land? What will the spacecraft look like? Also, most importantly, how can YOU help get humans to Mars? Watch to find out answers to these questions and so much more!

Great vid, definitely need people to dream and get involved. :) The world is a pretty screwed up place at the moment, but whilst there is all the doom and gloom going on there is also a lot of progress and hope for humanity. Keep the videos coming!

Recommend turning off autofocus on the camera if you're sat in the same place whilst talking. :P And theres some good DIY tutorials on here for making cheap sound absorbing panels which will improve the audio.

Excellent work Abby. Would be an educational value add to put in the show notes references to your answered questions. i.e. Radiation problems, fastest methods of travel to Mars, why go at specific Mars/Earth orbit position etc..

If issues go into building spacecraft via modularity, then larger, more advanced spacecraft can be assembled in near space. One can pack a compressed module of necessary supplies that will get you through a year easily, however if a robotically controlled near Falcon sized tube, packed with supplies which will stretch three years is also launched to Mars, then an almost permanent base of operations can be established to Mars. What will improve are the areas of advanced double wall anti-radiation protection for spacecraft assembly, with a emergency protective core room, for solar mass ejections. Greatly improved ion engines such as a Vasimir grades or other improved ion engines.Lastly some form of a gravity generating internal in-spacecraft array, which simulates gravity, via a graviton generator, which seems like Earths. Yes' I feel that journeying to Mars is possible, but like a chef does with a pot of soup, more fixings must go into the pot before serving. It's only my opinion, but the spacecraft proposed now, has to be made a little more complete, before trying to send it to its Mars landing goal.Thank you Abby and members of your group.

I know I've already said this, but I love these videos. It's so cool to learn about all these things that I probably wouldn't learn otherwise.

I'm so not fit for space both physically and mentally. LOL XD
