Just a quick note, using Htop won't give you a true representation of how much memory is being used on a FreeBSD system - the memory management is is slightly different to Linux - you will get an aggregate memory amount, not actual in use memory....for that just use plain top, that will be better... and also you are using ZFS and that will gobble some resources up... on the desktop or not is a contentious issue, but UFS is far lighter and perhaps better for a desktop/laptop...
